Mattawoman 9/16/18

I think this is my last trip to Mattawoman this year, and I took my brother, and some stogies. We got there around Noon, with HT around 1PM. Wow, what a change in just a couple weeks to Mattawoman. There is usually a large grass wall across from the bike path wall, but it was completely gone. Almost all the pads were submerged, partly due to all the rain, but the scenery was totally unexpected.

The weather was really weird, there were periods of time when dark clouds would roll by with 10-15MPH gusts, then pockets of sun and 3-5mph winds during which the bite would turn on. We only used Keitech toads and just fan casted everywhere since there were submerged pads and hydrilla all around us. All of our hits were in between the outer pad edge and the land grass edge, so basically in the middle of the pad fields. My brother landed the first fish, a close to 2lb LMB.

Then between the wind and clouds, we got some hits, but nothing really seemed to be committing to the toads, more swipes and nips with one lure coming back with no legs. I finally got a hit while I was looking at another boat in the pads. I heard the gulp, it wasn't a loud take, but just a very subtle slurp and I landed my only fish of the day. It was a small NSH. No picture because of his slippery quick release, but my brother got a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jIfFFu … e=youtu.be

I wanted to venture further into the Pond area, but there was another jon boat in there. They literally didn't move the entire time we were there, so I figured maybe there were carp fishing? Anyways, I didn't want to be rude so I gave them plenty of space and didn't bother half of the area I wanted to fish.

Around 3PM, the winds really picked up and we started to head back and I hit the pads across from the Beach, along the left side where there were some trees to protect us. I got 3 huge follows, but nothing committed to a bite! I went to bed last night thinking about seeing the huge wakes coming from the left or right and expecting a huge blow up....but nothing. It was disappointing...the first time I chartered with Mike for snakeheads, I had several of those kinds of follows and that's what got me hooked. It never gets old.
