Upper Potomac 9/5/18

I got out early and it was super foggy.  I thought that the topwater bite would be on fire, but I did not catch any in my usual spots.  I finally started drifting and managed one sickly looking bass that hit the Whopper Plopper.  This is the second one I have caught in a week that had a deformed tail that looked like it could be diseased,

I went upriver and tried lots of different baits,  Caught one on a swimbait and had another real hard hit on one with the underspin.  I caught a few on the crankbait, including one that was 16.5" and a snagged carp that pulled me around a bit.

After the sun came out it got hot quick.  I ate my lunch while working the middle of the river with maybe one more fish.  I had 5 SM and the carp and was thinking about getting off early.  I managed one smallie that hit the Whopper Plopper almost at the boat coming out of a shallow section.

I decided to float the shady side of and island and used a small plastic on a ned head and then a Z-man TRD when that got bit off.  I caught a sunfish and a couple dink smallies and then my biggest smallies of the day (18") on the TRD.
https://i.imgur.com/LENhs6n.jpg I figured I would try the Whopper Plopper in the shaded rocky shoreline.  I ended up catching 3 smallies and a super aggressive sunfish that managed to get all 3 hooks of the treble all the way in it's mouth (did not end well).  I hooked one more nice fish on the WP that pulled drag and turned the boat.  I never got a good look at it, but it had another fish with it and somehow pulled off before I could get it in.  Overall a good day, with 10 smallies, 2 sunfish and the carp.  I was off the water by 1:00pm.

When I was taking out, a guy came and asked me how many fish I caught.  I told him and he came back when I was getting the boat together and asked about how much my boat was.  Then he told me he was with Charley Taylor (Hall of Fame Redskin Receiver).  He said Charlie had a stroke and it messed up his side.  He asked if I wanted to meet him.  I said yes and went over to the bench he was sitting at in the shade.  He looked very thin, but was super nice.  HE wanted to buy my boat.  He was with another ex-Redskin that played during the George Allen years.  His name was Dennis johnson and he played defense.  I was so overheated that I did not think to get a picture with them.  We talked about fishing in the river and Charley told a story about messing up a bass boat he had trying to run it there.  Cool ending to a hot day!

Very cool about meeting that Charlie Taylor but Wiki says that Dennis Johnson died in 1997. Maybe there's another one....

I'll be out tomorrow but not sure I will last until 1 pm.  The 19 mile bike ride today caused me to take a nap!

I might have missed his name.   I only got either Johnson or Jackson and guessed from the roster.  I looked again and cannot be sure as no other name is close.

BTW, when I crossed the Goose on my bike ride, it was still more brown than green.
