Paul and I got on the water close to 5pm and decided to head up river a bit...but stopped to say hi to John who had a nice day catching a few.

I say it all of the time but every day is different on the river.

We saw some bait chasing activity on the shore so we pounded it and had maybe 1 bite. Then we decided to drift the river and Paul took the skunk off the boat!

On this stretch, I had a couple of bites and had one come off but Paul was able to catch a few more....

....including a fat 15.5 incher!

And a nice Long Ear sunny!

I caught a small LE sunny as well. He was harassing my bait, I set the hook on his belly!

And finally, I took my smallie skunk off!

As the sun started to drop...

...we hit the top of an island and Paul got hit on a top water bait. The fish got off but Paul got his top water rush!

We then dropped down for a last run at some top water action. We saw lots of activity and just before it got too dark, I wan able to nail this 15.25 incher on a jerk bait. It was on my L bait casting rod and this guy just didn't want to come close. Nice fight!

For the 3 hours, Paul had 5 smallies and the sunny, I had 2 smallies and a sunny.

It was a very pleasant evening until the last 15 minutes when the mosquitoes came out to play. I think Paul lost an ounce of blood to them.

It was getting really dark when we took out but Paul is a night fishing expert so he kept me cool and calm. Other than the knucklehead who had his lights on at the top of the ramp (we could not see a thing), take out  went smooth.

I knew you would notice. I took one from the bag but the darn thing wouldn't fit in my spinner (eye too small) so I just tossed it and swam it a bit. Might use it for perch fishing tomorrow if the rains stop.

Bite was slow, we caught 1.33 fish per hour. Still, it was nice being out...until it got dark when the 1/2 moon decided to hide behind a cloud.

Re: 8-20-18, UP

The trip was actually a bit more productive than I expected given the recent reports and conditions. Either way, it sure beat the heck out of working late and then sitting on the couch the rest of the night.

I felt like given a bit more time and removing our desire to make a top water bite happen, we could have picked a bunch more fish. On several occasions we had multiple bites in a small area. Rather than work that area for several drifts, we opted to keep going to put us in better position for the magic hour. It took me a little while to get my river feel back but when I did I was able to put that tube in front of the fishes face and get bit. In the future I may just bring 2 rods, one with a tube and one with a Zman pop shad. It's how I catch 90% or more of my fish in that river anyway. lol

As always it was a great trip with Ernie. As I told my wife when I got home when she asked me how the fishing was, "the best part about fishing with Ernie is fishing with Ernie". Thank you again boss.

Yes, the tube bites were concentrated and anchoring or spot locking on those spots would be productive.  I thought about it, but was too lazy to switch from my drag chain to the anchor.  Nice to meet you, Paul.
