Another new boat post?

Yep!

Last August, after realizing my little freshwater boat was not suitable for open water fishing, I decided I really, really, desperately needed a second boat to expand my fishing options in the Chesapeake Bay. I couldn't justify investing in a new one, so I started scouring Craigslist for a fixer-upper in the 18-20ft range, and eventually found a 1989 Wellcraft 18 Sport with a 150hp Mariner. The engine didn't run and the trailer needed work, but it fit the bill.

Of course I found plenty more that needed fixing along the way, so the to-do list kept growing.

ENGINE

Replace head gaskets
Replace switch boxes
Replace starter
Replace voltage regulator
Remove oil injection/Install block off kit
Rebuild carburetors
Replace spark plugs
Replace fuel line
Replace fuel filter
Replace fuel/water separator
Change lower unit oil

BOAT

Stain/coat swim deck
Stain/coat interior wood trim
Paint gunwale rod holders
Replace speakers
Replace bulbs in console gauges
Replace gasket on fuel sending unit
Replace horn
Replace fuse block
Replace livewell pump
Replace bow light
Replace fuel tank vent
Make rear hatch lids
Make engine well divider
Install storage mounts for stern light
Install t-top rod holders
Install dual battery shelf and batteries in hull
Install battery charger
Install trolling motor and quick release mount

TRAILER

Replace wheels & tires
Replace hubs and bearings
Install electric brakes
Replace leaf springs and mounting hardware
Install junction box and plug
Replace all wiring
Replace all lights
Replace winch cable
Replace electric winch relay
Replace jack

TOW VEHICLE

Install 7-pin trailer outlet
Install brake controller

I don't have a garage, so weather and lack of daylight were constant complications, but after 6 months of work I finally got it on the water for a test drive a couple weeks ago, and she works! Still have plenty to do, like replacing the outdated depthfinder, installing a cooler seat, removing the old nasty bottom paint, etc. I'm sure it will be a work in progress for as long as I own it, but in the meantime, it's ready to fish!

Re: Another new boat post?

Thanks guys. It had a solid transom, a nice t-top, and a new lower unit, but pretty much everything else needed TLC. Can't wait to get a new depthfinder on it.

Oh, and if anyone knows a place in northern/central VA that could strip bottom paint from a boat, please let me know. I tried scraping, scrubbing, and pressure washing, but it has not been fun and I'm ready to pay someone else to do it.
