DC Fish Market

OH my gosh is this a mess. Yesterday I went to the market. 2 dollar parking and a good mile walk. So if you want to buy a bushel of crabs or 20 pounds of bait I suggest you bring a handcart. The garage where you park is a tight fit for trucks also. Only half of the garage is open and all the spaces close to the elevator are marked for tenants only or EV cars. The whole market is almost empty while real estate guys entertain groups that block the walk way. Most of the people where from a tour bus and nobody buying anything.

Cops are writing tickets for those who stop in the special lanes in front the high end restaurants there now.

All of the cleaning businesses are gone. So where does one go to get fish cleaned now after a big day of catching?

Gone are the days when the buyer for major restaurants show up with large coolers since they have very little access.

I intend to spend as much money as one man can do to keep them afloat.

Change is constant but not always good.

Re: DC Fish Market

Last time I went I was surprised to see vendors selling carp there. Who is buying those, and for what?

Re: DC Fish Market

Carp is very tasty and with some lemon grass makes a great steamed whole fish..

I go for the mullet my self. Or as the call it on the menu Jumping Mullet.

You ever there during a weekday let me know.  I'll hike down & buy you lunch

Re: DC Fish Market

Went again last evening for some mullet. This time brought a hand cart and the mile walk was not bad. Almost empty too. Young man approached me and asked if I needed my fish cleaned. Wanted to ask where he does this? But did not. The fish cleaning guys have moved to Martin Luther King Ave SE. by the big chair. They are doing a brisk business from what I have heard.

Most of the people at the market are tourist.

Re: DC Fish Market

Just saw this post.

Man this is sad. I remember my dad, God rest his soul, would take us and the hustle and bustle was so exciting. I went a few times in my adult life, but when I started fishing from the kayak (hat tip to Bob), I haven't gone since. I need to make it out there just to show support. The fish cleaning guys were the best! Smiles all around and I loved the signs hanging on the walls.

So to understand, there is no parking by the market anymore?

Worth repeating that "Change is constant but not always good. "

Re: DC Fish Market

Yes you can park in the lot down the street about 1/2 mile away and pay 3 bucks if you purchase fish and show your receipt to the guy in the booth. He scans your ticket and gives you 15-20 minutes to get out of the lot.
If you are late they send right back to the booth.
