Bob and I met up at 7:15a....at Joe's Cafe in Sterling. Breakfast was really good, I highly recommend the place. I had a chorizo burrito....

We splashed the boat round 8:30a....

....it was chilly but not bad.

We went upriver for a bit and tried shoreline, middle, other shoreline and got only 1 suspected bite!

So, we decided to have a quick lunch.

Apparently, lunch time is a good time to fish because I caught 3 fish (14.5, 14 and 13) in a 15 minute span!

Those 2 were FAT chunks and I would have bet (before seeing them) that they were much bigger fish!

We caught 2 more in the same hour and then no more sniffs.

It seemed to stay cold all day. The sun hardly ever peeked out and the wind kicked up a bit to keep us cold.

Theses fish were not in deep holes....

Still, a nice day out trying to figure out cold weather smallies. Water temps were 44-47 all day and the current was running hard. Very few leaves on the surface but tons of them on the bottom.

This report was posted before I got home. Another fun day fishing with Ernie. I just fished, Ernie did all of the catching.

All came on the same bait (as shown), fished at a 45* angle and back off the boat, slowly moved. Lots of suspension time. When it felt like a snag, it was a fish!

I would have guessed that first fish was much bigger than 14.5. Looks like a football.

This is what we have been seeing this year....FAT smallies. They all seem bigger as they are fighting.

Wasn't too bad at the start, was trying out a new hat/mask. As the hours passed and the breeze picked up I got damn cold. By 2:00 my fingers were so cold it took 5 minutes to tie on a new lure. The heat was on most of the way home.

I'm proud to say you're finally embracing VA temps and leaving behind your Cuban heritage to brave the cold

Well done

smile I always complain about the cold but have fished in it for many years! But...once that temp is in the 20's & 30's in the AM, I won't go unless I know it will get to the 40's.   cool
