4-30-07, Potomac River report...FINALLY....some pullage!

Four of us met up at Gravely Point (Reagan National Airport) as the sun went up on Monday morning.

Joining me were, John Campo, Dave Robinson and Curly (John Casale). After last Saturday's near skunk, I was worried about what kind of action we might see but within the 1st 20 minutes, we had some pullage, and Curly took the skunk off the boat with a nice channel cat.

One down and 2 more fishermen to go. It didn't take long and John Campo brought up another channel cat.

One more fisherman to go and that would be Dave. We found out that Dave has only been fishing once in his life previous to today. Now the pressure is on but we had faith in him and he nailed his 1st channel cat.

We did not get any blue cats or stripers in this spot so we moved and then the action got hot. We stared catching herring and white perch in good numbers and size. But still no blue cats or stripers so we moved several more times.

We were using sabiki rigs for the herring, bottom spreader rigs for the perch and a bottom set up for the big stuff using both live and cut herring. Most of the time, I was throwing a small shad jig with a dropper but to no avail.

Finally, I was able to land a couple of nice 16" hickories.

But the blue cats and stripers kept eluding us. We moved down river and caught a few more herring and perch when Curly hooked into our 1st blue cat of the day (and year). It was a nice fish, but no monster.

With about 30 minutes to go before we had to leave, I was in the back of the boat when a rod started to act up. I gabbed it and put it in free spool and watched he line pay out. I looked at Curly and he said it was time! Time to set the hook and the fight was on! After a few minutes, I got the big blue to the side of the boat and Curly tried to land him in a net that was too small (only one we had on board). What was real cool was turning around and seeing Dave’s and John's eyes when the monster broke out of the water. He was huge! Curly estimated it at 25 lbs or so. I say estimate because when he came out of the water he shook his head and busted the line!

Then, we were just about to leave when Curly picked up a rod and stated to fight another big one. That only lasted for 15 seconds and he broke away. OK....time for me to change out some lines and put some new stuff on!

It was a great day on the water (we had a little rain, a little heat and a ton of wind later in the trip).
