DGIF Study on Beaverdam Reservoir

The DGIF study results recently done for Beaverdam Reservoir

Yes, our biologists hit Beaverdam Creek on May 15 with electrofishing gear. Their preliminary report indicated a decent catch rate of 61 largemouth bass (LMB) per hour (80-100 per hour would have been nicer). The bass were on the large size, so it looks like we might supplement the population with young fish by stocking fingerlings next month. We hope to also stock redear sunfish (RDE) this summer, as they were not collected on May 15. The substrate for this fine sunfish looks promising. Channel catfish were abundant and reproducing. Food base: gizzard shad and white perch in abundance. They spotted, but did not net, one “monster” smallmouth bass. In short, the lake looks promising “as is”, but stockings of LMB and RDE will only help. Additionally, the fishery was not negatively affected by the drawdown; it is still 6 feet below normal pool.

I would also add we are stocking about 5000 bass fingerlings this week to supplement some spotty natural recruitment. Forage is very abundant, so I expect great future fishing at this lake.

We will continue to keep an eye on this valued Northern Virginia asset. Thanks for checking in.

Re: DGIF Study on Beaverdam Reservoir

Any guess as to how many fish there are in body of water that size.  is it in the thousands, 10's of thousands, or 100's of thousands?

Plenty of Florida strain DNA in the VA largemouth population including the Occoquan Reservoir.
