Hooper Island 8/29/2014

Went out around Hooper Island with a kayaking friend yesterday trolling for stripers and anything else that might hit. We stayed in 2-4 feet of water and skirted the shore. Since the grass is out in full, we were using light jigs. We first were using 1/8 oz and then went lower at 1/16 oz which went above and through the grass grabbing very little to no debris.

Fish seemed to like a slow troll between 2 and 2.5 mph. Cadence played a big role in managing the speed and depth that seemed to bring the most strikes. I was using 4" paddle tails at first but got no hits. My friend got them first on chartreuse gulp swimming mullet and handed me some. We both started catching after that. My buddy ended up with around a dozen at the end of the day and I ended up with around 8. Best part was we both went home with two keepers each! My biggest for the day was 20.5"

Good times and beautiful scenery

So I decided to do something different with the beautiful fish!

Rockfish Ceviche

I slightly modified a recipe I learned in Costa Rica. No this one doesn't have Date Syrup, so I can't call it an Iraqi Rockfish Ceviche LOL! wink

Thanks Ernie!

Here is some more food stuff!

Since the storm was coming in today I opted to do the second Rockfish on the grill, since roasting it Masgouf style takes some time. So I decided to debone it and put a great BBQ rub I got from Trader Joe's. Man it was tasty!!  Usually when I debone a fish I still keep the spine and season it and grill it on the side. Then I just eat the meat of the bone... man oh man...

Cervice is great ... I get it in DC all the time, except I don't catch it.

It doesn't get any fresher when you catch it your self. Nothing like knowing that your eating ceviche that was caught yesterday smile
