June 2013 Shasta Lake

A few weeks ago, Janet and I went out on a one week sightseeing road trip to tour southern Oregon and northern California. We fished at Shasta Lake in northern California on June 11.

I took this picture of Shasta Dam.

But the above picture does not show the full height of the dam, so I found this picture online. That dam is over 500 feet high at the center.

We caught 14 trout but none were as big as we had hoped for. We were not targeting bass, but we caught 7 of those too.

We trolled using downriggers to fish at depths ranging from 30 to 80 ft. down depending on where the sonar was marking fish. In the picture below there is a fish at about 45 ft down in water 339 ft. deep.

They have floating rest rooms scattered around on this lake. How nice!

On the way down there we scouted some lakes and rivers for possible future fishing trips and we toured Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon.

Mt Shasta is the 2nd highest in the Cascade Mountain Range at a bit over 14,000 ft

On the way home we toured the coast from Eureka CA to Reedsport OR

Eureka harbor

We hiked through groves of giant redwood trees

We even drove the car through one

And we saw lots of the beautiful rugged coast

Fantastic pics! Love the floating restroom!

I've heard Shasta has some ginormous spotted bass.

I can only imagine what it's like to wake every morning and see the vistas you see out your window. And then add in the species of fish you have, you live in heaven.

Wow! I lived in Southern CA for several years, but it's nothing compared to Northern CA.  I really get a kick out of the redwoods.  Great photos.  It really makes me appreciate nature through your eyes! They really should split CA in half...just north of Bakersfield. lol

Great stuff - love the floating restrooms too. Would make taking the Mrs. and kids fishing much more feasible!

Beautiful scenery abounds and good eating fish aplenty!

We did see several boats that were targeting bass along the shorelines. We were surprised to be getting some out at the depths we were fishing at.

And there is no state income tax in Washington and no state sales tax in Oregon. We live in Washington, three miles from the bridge over to Oregon. smile

The bass in that pic kinda looks like a spot, but hard to tell for sure.  Do you know which it was?

I'm just guessing here, but I bet it beats the stuffing out of trolling for blue cats under 14th st. bridge.
