Tog, Wind, and More Wind!

I had the opportunity to take a few days off from work this past week to get out and do some fishing, so I took it! Unfortunately, the wind did not get the memo and I did not get to fish as much as I would have liked. Nonetheless, I got out and did some tog fishing before heading up to the Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree.

Tog fishing was tough in the wind but not impossible. The bite seemed off so I figured I would try something new and drop a snail of some sort of snail that I picked up at the H-Mart near my house. It worked, stayed on the hook longer, and I caught my largest tog of the day on it! It was weird, seemed like I would get a fish on one bait and then I would have to switch to a different bait for the next one. I alternated between blue crab, mussels, and the snails.

I tried also some non TidalTails jigheads and they seemed to work just as well so that was good news. I used 1/2 jigheads and just let them drift through the cracks in the rocks. The tog try to grab the bait and take it back to their holes, it's a completely different bite and a lot of fun to catch a big tog on a light tackle spinning rod!

As for the flats, I do not think I even took a picture out on the water! I have some gopro footage but I doubt any of it is very interesting. Long story short it was very windy Friday, pretty windy Saturday morning and really windy in the afternoon, and I didn't even fish Saturday! Complete skunk for me. Friday night it stormed pretty hard and I slept in my truck. I was not eager to sleep in my tent another night for poor fishing so I packed it up and headed home Saturday night to earn some brownie points!

Here's some tog shots:

I know people use hermit crabs for tog, but that's the first I've heard of using snails. Great idea!

Your report was killing me.

It was good thing that you could launch the kayak and came back ( I believe it was westerly wind).
I am heading CHSP next Saturday.  Mustafa and I couldn't dare to launch the kayaks on the last Saturday

Awesome going bro! With 'Bait' in their name, no wonder they worked well LOL

Yeah man, wish we could have made it out there on Saturday but I'm told April weather can be tough and we witnessed it first hand. Oh well, hopefully in the fall!

Joe good luck at CHSP!
