2-16-07, Jacksonville FL fishing report

I left icy DC in search of some warm temps and to get in a 1/2 day of fishing. I accomplished the later but not the former.

The plan was to take couple of clients fishing on Friday, 2/16 (the day after an industry meeting at Amelia Island). The only trouble was that the two guys from Philly could not get out due to the icy conditions in the Northeast. So I told the Capt. that he and I were going fishing and that I expected him to participate in the event. A big smile came on him and he was ready to go!

So, on cold (32 degrees) and breezy morning Friday morning I met up with Captain James Howard to go out and give it a try in his 24 skiff. We were on the St. John's River....

.....and the plan was to go after some speckled trout. Did I mention that it was cold? Yes...the coldest weather in over 30 years down there. Man....did I pick a great day or what?

Capt. James was not too worried about getting skunked but he was worried about catching more than just a couple of fish.

We headed up the St. John's and into Clapboard Creek and proceeded to fish the drop offs right off the grass. We had no takers in an area that usually gives up some fish so we moved to an area that blocked the wind a bit better.

Capt. James told me to fish the jig slowly and to make sure I felt the bottom and I said, “this is my kind of fishing”! In a few minutes, I took the skunk off the boat and landed our 1st speckled trout!

Almost immediately, I landed another one and now Capt. James was worried that I was going to beat him on his own turf. It didn’t take long for him to catch me and we traded bragging rights a few times. Then we moved into some deeper water when we saw some birds working and I managed to get in to some small blues. They always give a nice fight so that was some god fun.

For the ˝ day, I ended up with 6 specks, 4 blues (little guys) and a Sea Robin.....

...... which was a bit of a rare catch in those waters. Capt. James ended up with 7 specks to nudge me out in that category. I really enjoyed fishing with him, to reach him, go to his website at: http://www.gofishjax.com. On his website he says that any day is a good day to Go Fish! Believe him, because the conditions were not good with the unusual cold weather but we went out and had some success!

It was nice to get out but I got a rude awakening when we flew over the Potomac (from the south) and it was all iced up from Cobb Island to DC!
