Nice 9-point buck and a big doe today

Was invited to hunt this morning on a nice property.  Got two deer with the muzzleloader.  Was finished hunting by 8:30 am.  Big doe at 7:30 about 140 lbs and 30 minutes later...........a nice 9-pointer around 180-185 lbs or so.  The doe left a good blood trail and dropped after 40-50 yards.  The buck was hit through both lungs, but did not leave a blood trail sad .  It ran about 100 yards and didn't drop any blood until about 20 yards before it fell.  Was worried I would not find it.  Both are now skinned out, quartered, and in the basement fridge, aging for a couple days before cutting up into loins, steaks, and burger on Wed or Thur evening.   Pics to follow once I get them vial email.

Re: Nice 9-point buck and a big doe today

That is great. Those are some big deer. How thick was the fat on them?  With all the acorn on the ground this year they must have been real porkers.  I got a doe about 15 years ago that went 130. Double lung punched her and she barely left a drop of blood for 150 yards.  She was so fat that the fat just plugged the entrance and exit holes up. That was a hands and knees tracking job and just picking up the up-turned leaf here and there.  When I went to start field dressing her, I could barley get a good pinch of loose skin on her belly.  I guess she really enjoyed her acorns.

I have been thinking the last few mornings that this is great weather to be out in the woods right now. I seems like most years we have a week of indian summer right about now which kills the afternoon hunt and sends them mostly nocturnal.

No hunting for me this year.  Between everything going on here at work and losing my spot to development it just isn't going to happen. I did catch a small 8 pt trying to put a rub on a poplar tree in my yard sunday night when I got home. The jerk just stood there looking at me and then went back to hitting my tree. I am tempted to grab the rattling antlers and go out there at night to see who or what comes in. I still have a decent sized one that comes through the yard every once in a while. I see his spread toes in the lawn when I am out mowing. I haven't gotten him on the trail cam yet.

Both deer were loaded with fat.  Here is a pic of both.

Water is about 6-7 feet deep in that pic just after Hurricane Sandy came through.  Still had to wade through 6-10" of water in spots to get to the stand yesterday.

Wow....what a honey hole (for deer)! nice bucks.  I've been trying to get out there for archery and blackpowder...I fear I will have to wait until rifle now.  Anyway, it's great to be able to share in your successes.  That's what makes this forum so cool, the outdoors life.

Yeah, one of the fellas on the Potomac Bass Club site posted that.  I've seen many deer crossing the upper and lower Potomac.  Even had one cross the river at Fletcher's while fishing for stripers 2 springs ago.

I hit a deer with my motorcycle on the way to work yesterday.  Last week I had a decent buck cross the run in front of me in the same spot.   I'll be taking the truck for the next month or two.

Had these behind my house last week.  Unfortunately not legal to hunt here.
