Long post. Hope you enjoy.
Every year Tyler and I take a fishing trip to either Canada or the FL Keys. This year was Canada and my daughter had heard so many great stories from our previous trips that she decided she wanted to come along for the first time. We flew into Duluth MN on Friday and drove most of the way up that afternoon. The next morning we drove to Red Lake, Ontario and then drove down a dirt logging road for 30 miles to meet a guy at the landing on the Nungesser River. We drove about 5 miles up the river and then got out and portaged all our luggage, rods, food, etc around some rapids to another set of boats. We took those boats another few miles up the river to the main lake, which is about 25 miles long and 3 miles wide. The camp is on an island in the middle of the lake about 3 miles up lake. This video gives you an idea of what the trip up river was like.
This is the cabin and camp. By the way, the boats were Lund Outfitter (I think) with nice seats and fishing platforms, depthfinders and 40HP Hondas. They are the best thing about the camp. But we spend the most time in them, so they are critical. The camp can be a bit "do it yourself" sometimes. But that is OK. It is on an island with a generator providing power 24 hrs a day. They provide 3 meals a day and are really nice people.
Finally we got fishing!! The lake holds huge Walleye (up to 34 inches) and huge Pike (up to 54 inches). My daughter's 2nd Walleye was this 26 incher. I was very proud of her. She put on the Leech, cast, reeled it in, and took the hook out all by herself!
Not sure when all these fish were caught, but here are some of the trophies for the week. Tyler is a fishing machine. He caught more fish than anyone and was a huge help locating the fish and finding the best spots. He went out on the lake by himself a couple times. His biggest Walleye of the week was a 27 inch Walleye. But I didn't get a picture. Here is an example of some of his other big fish. He caught these 24 and 26 inchers.
He also got this nice 29 inch Pike
I got these 23 and 26 inch Walleye.
My Brother-in-Law, Roy and niece Nicole caught some big fish too.
Each night we held an award ceremony. The largest fish of the day got the "Big Moose" award and the person who caught the most fish got the "Fishing Monster" award. The rest got the "Wannabees" award. Tyler won the "Fishing Monster" award most days catching about 60 per day, and my daughter won the "Big Moose" award the first day for her 26 inch Walleye.
A few times during the week we had "Shore Lunch". There were a couple places on the lake where they had put picnic tables. It is amazing being in the middle of nowhere with no people within 20 miles. We even saw fresh Moose tracks on the beach. Nothing beats a shore lunch of fresh fried walleye and potatoes!!
I look forward to this trip all year. Next year we will be fishing out of West Palm Beach and the Bahamas. I already started planning!! Can't wait.
PS Thanks for reading. Hope I didn't bore you all.
