1-13-07, CBBT-Cape Henry report

So now we are on to day two of the trip.

The guide we had hired had been taken to the emergency room the night before with kidney stones. Here we were, 7 PM on Friday night and no guide for the next day. That was not so bad since we had just had an incredible day of fishing on Friday night but Art Reynolds and Carl Cisky had driven down from NoVA and had not fished yet. Rob Allen spent close to 2 hours calling contacts and calling in chits and managed to hire a guide at the last minute, we knew nothing about him.

At 8 AM on Saturday morning, we meet up at Long Pointe Marina (Lynnhaven) and meet our guide, Craig Paige. He has a nice 27' Power Cat.....

....and off we go to the CBBT. We immediately start to hook up with fish but they are in the low 20's so we moved around 4-5 times, looking for birds
and hoping for a better class of fish. That was not to be. While we were fishing for these smaller fish, the Capt. mentioned Cape Henry 2-3 times. I finally asked, "why don't we go there?” It took all of 3 seconds for the crew to agree and off we went. 15-20 minutes later, we find ourselves under a thousand birds....

....and amongst 300 boats! I have never seen so many boats fishing in one place like that.

We were light tackle jigging and we started to catch some nice fish.

This continued for a while as we moved from spot to spot until Carl got a huge hit and the fish started to take to heavy duty line. We all brought our lines in and watched Carl fight his fish for 10-12 minutes. He won he fight and was rewarded with the big fish of the trip.....a 42" beauty!

This was a 1\2 day charter and we had caught about 75 fish, some smaller ones at the CBBT and some nice 30 inch class in the ocean. But it was time to go in so I said "one last cast" and I was rewarded with a very fat 34" fish that wore my arm down!

So we took off for the marina. But the Captain is a true fisherman. He spotted a ton of diving gannets and he made a bee line for them. He said he just could not pass them up.  For the next 45 minutes (on his dime), we caught the best class fish of the day as we reeled in about a dozen fish, most in the mid 30” class. Here is a Rob Allen and Art Reynolds double header!

What a way to finish!

Capt. Craig Paige was outstanding, he can be reached at:www.fishpaige2.com.

This was an amazing weekend of fishing and to top it all of, while we were among the 300 boats, I look over and see a fly fisherman fighting a 40+” fish.....

.....it was my friend Carlos Maceo on Chris Newsome’s Jones Bros. boat! Small world!

We were on the road by 2 PM and at 3 PM we were at Pierce’s enjoying a BBQ sandwich.

The images of those 30-45 inch Stripers rolling on the surface chasing the Scared Menhaden will be etched in my memory for a long time!!

Re: 1-13-07, CBBT-Cape Henry report

It's now been eight days since we went fishing at CBBT and I still cannot get the images out of my mind. This was one of the most eventful trips that I have ever been on.

Towards the end of the trip on Saturday, I caught a 35-36" fatso that I faught for a few minutes. After landing him, my forearm was knotted up and my hand was unusable for a few seconds. Catching these big boys on light tackle is a rush that needs to be experianced by all!

Next year, I am going to use a fly rod on the big ones!
