Bay Bridge Kayaking 7/20/11

My dad and decided to take a trip to Sandy Point state park on the yaks for the first time this morning. It was our first time ever being on the bay with the yaks and they held up great!! we started out using bloodworms and a gulp jerk shad by the jetties with plenty of bites but all were to small and bit off the tail sad .  I caught a small white perch and a small croaker in the first 2 hours. Not to good...After getting bit off at the jetties i decided to head over to the pilings and try my luck livelineing the croaker and jigging for striper. My dad was just outside the pilings and caught a bluefish and a few big spot that we cut up for bait.

After I livelined and jigged the pilings for a good hour and a half with no bites i decided to head back to the jetties and try catching the smaller fish with a small beetlespin with a shad dart on it and go my first striper ever!!

....Not much of a striper but it was a striper!! big_smile After i caught that one they just kept on coming. I caught about 15 striper all in the 3-7 inch range one after another until i had to set my rod down to untangle a loose line... setting my line down caused it to sink to the bottom and when this happened i decided to slowroll it like Mr. Rojas says. I did this and then i feel a thud and weight. I got a really good fight on a medium action rod and came up with my biggest white perch ever 11 1/2 in!!!!

I repeated this let fall and slow roll technique for a while and got about 4-5 more white perch all in the 8-11 inch range. I did this again but moved it a little faster this time and another thud with weight...but this one had a lot more weight then a white perch would have. Turned out to be my first respectable striper about a pound and a half or so.

Overall it was a decent day on the water. Nothing big but still fun and it was a beautifully calm day on the bay.
