2011 Electroshocking Ashburn Village ponds by the state of Virginia.

John Odenkik, VA State biologist, gave us a day from his very busy schedule to electroshock a few of the AV lakes. Due to the recent weather patterns, we figured that we are about a week or two early but you got to take the time when it is given to you so off we went!

Yesterday, John shocked a creek in VA.......

The good luck charm....

We started at Pavilion with John manning the motors, Curly was the front net man and I picked up the stragglers.

Don't touch!!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/011-2.jpg

At 1st, we were concerned because as we hit the rip rap and north shore line, no fish were seen but once we got going, there was no shortage of fish.

Once we came in, we were satisfied with the "catch"

Since I was working the net, I did not get many pictures at Pavilion, hopefully Khanh did. Then we went to Cedar, Khahn took my spot and I was able to get some shots of the operation.

Last shot....I had to go take a call....

Once again, MANY thanks to John Odenkirk for providing this service to teh Village. It s much appreciated and we will take his recommendations seriously!

Very Cool!
1. Is he telling where those snake heads came from? I got hungry looking at them.
2. Were there still big bass in Cedar?

Details will come later after Odenkirk mails me the data.  Two nice fish were pulled out (and put back).......a 6-5 and a 5-6.  Pics are blacked out to keep poachers/lurkers/trespassers away from the lake they were in.

The 6-5....

And the 5-6 with the 6-5....

My understanding is that Curly and crew have erased the location from their memory. They no longer know where those 2 fat fish reside!!!

We will talk about some of this at the L & P meeting tonight at 7...

That background really makes your hair pop Curly.  Nice work and looking forward to the report.  I've decided that as incentive to get back to the gym I will attempt to work out at AVSP from 6am-7am and fish from 7am-8am (as my reward for working out).  We'll see how it goes ........

I have not forgotten lol , but that lake has been decimated by the poachers.  The poachers have taken their toll on the ABC Lakes, with few bass over 2 lbs found today in those lakes.  Odenkirk believes they have been removed.  Pavilion has improved dramatically and Tippacanoe is only in its 3rd year after the fish kill and restocking......Give Tippacanoe 2-3 more years.

Odenkirk recommended keeping the 14" rule in effect on all lakes and many, many small bass must be removed from Cedar.  Pavilion can still use some major thinning of small bass, but it is the premier lake now for quality bass.

If you want numbers of quality bass.......Pavilion is it.

Beautiful pic Curly!! It was nice doing the electroshocking with you and Odenkirk today. Those two were probably the nicest ones we sampled. Killawog was definitely a surprise!!

I would love to catch a snakehead but hate that they have invaded the Potomac and its feeder streams and creeks.  Thanks guys for setting this up and getting John out here. It must have been a blast to see what boiled up from the depths.  Any more monster 71 lb carp or any signs that armor plated dinosaur looking thing/carp  that was pulled out of B a few years back?

The jury is out about whether or not they are doing any damage. Remember that LMB is not native to the Potomac.

None were shocked up this year but that does not mean they are gone.....the fish may have been deeper than the 5' depths that the probes covered.

Ditto - Thanks for caring so much about the lakes and ponds in AV. You are truly the stewards of these enjoyable fisheries and who knows where they would be without you both.

Re: 2011 Electroshocking Ashburn Village ponds by the state of Virginia.

Carl Johnson introduced me to John Odenkirk 20 years ago or so. I remember that Carl wanted to put white perch in a certain lake. John advised him not to but Carl did it anyway because he wanted a place he could walk to to catch his favorite fish. John and I chuckled about that yesterday.

We owe him a dept of gratitude.

That is pretty telling,  well I guess it really depends on when they do the shocking.  With the numbers they shock out of BDR that means there a lot of big ones hanging out in the shallows and I am a bad fisherman.

i  betray a personal bias
lake "a" is the focal point of my thinking
many thanks to mr odenkirk, for his work in AV , as well as the rest of the area.
i hear his name out on the water, and never in a negative sense...

Re: 2011 Electroshocking Ashburn Village ponds by the state of Virginia.

OK, I'm back in town now.  Cedar and Pavilion need many bass removed ASAP that are under 12".  I have 2 posts to this effect under Lakes and Ponds Issues.  It may get complicated because the L &P committee voted to go back to catch and release only, due to poachers removing the big bass from the ABC lakes.  My opinion is that C&R will further hurt the lakes and turn them all into dink ponds eventually...........because the poachers that are removing the big bass are very sly and have yet to be caught....and will continue to poach the big fish under cover of darkness or very early mornings.   The normal bluegill bucket brigade has had no effect on the bluegill populations and have virtually no impact on the big bass.  I have never seen a bucket in the last 3 years with a bass over 3 lbs.
