2/18, Cutlet Drain Canal (FL) report

I got out for a couple of hours late this afternoon (on foot) and fished the canal where I normally meet Capt. Mark Hall when we go out. We don't fish there but I have seen some fish around in the past. I did see him cruising the canal late in the day....should have hired him!

The water is fairly clear and the canals are deep with a hard limestone shoreline (sharp dropoffs). Today I was using the fy rod and the target was peacock and/or largemouth bass. I did see one largemouth but as soon as he saw me....gone! I also got several shots at either a Striped Tilapia or Mayan Cichlid. No matter....the fsh did not want my offering. What I did see a lot of were Midas Cichlids but they usually don't take a fly....except one, the one I nailed! He just got too close to my fly and I set the hook righ on his mouth! I will post a picture when I get home next week.

Interestingly, one of the park workers saw me bring the fish in and he said that was the 1st time in 5 years that he had seen anyone catch a fish there. Hmmmm....this was my 1st fish there in 3 tries (from the banks). I tink I need to move on to another place.

The weather is great (80s every day I am here)...let's just hope the fish will cooperate more in the next few days.
