9-18, Severn River Report

Today, Jimmy Rekas, Jamie Gold and I hit the Severn to get some Jumbo perch. The pressure was on as I needed to get perch for Jeff English, Julio who works at Blimpies, Jamie who has never tried 'em and lastly, for Jimmy, the human vacuum cleaner. That is a tall order but with the catch rates we had lately, I had the cooler ready. We set 9.5" as he standard for keepers.

We put in at Truxtun Park and off to the Naval Academy wall we went but no one was home....as well, the tide was really low.....really, really low. Quickly, we moved up to the honey hole and before long, Jamie took the skunk off the boat.

This was Jamie's 1st White Perch ever....a 9.5 incher to boot! A little later, he landed a 10.25 incher....we are going to have a good day!

Jimmy then got into the action....

And then....the bottom fell out. The tide was really low and the wind (forecaster 5-10 but was double that) was pushing the water out of the river. So we made a run.....

We went out on the bay and sniffed around a bit. We found some decent marks and jigged for a while but all we got was a few bluefish bite offs. Back to the river we go and in to Weems Creek. Surely we will catch some WP here......we did manage a few but they were not there in numbers. Back out we went.....

We hit a few other areas but it was 1 or 2 fish and then nothing.

Time was running out so back to the honey hole we went.  I threw the same stuff that I always do. I retrieved the way I always have. I caught very few fish. This one.....

....was a nice 10.75 incher.....I barely felt the bite. i thought I was rolling over an oyster shell. No peck and no fight....just a little drag on the line.

For the day, we caught 25 fish. Twenty one WP, three stripers and a spot. Jamie had 9 fish.....Jimmy and I had 8 each. We lost more iron than I ever remember losing.....maybe 15-20 rigs!

Yes, I am still perplexed at the low numbers....the low tide may have been the reason but I am thankful that we got out and enjoyed a great day on the water.

Hopefully, Jeff English enjoyed the 6 Jumbo's that we brought him.....

Not a terrible day, beats sitting home with A honey do list. Hope it turns around by tomorrow, taking grandson to Truxton in the morning. I'm playing it safe, bought some peelers.

Re: 9-18, Severn River Report

I just got a report from a couple that also fished on Saturday....with BETTER resutls!

"Kim and I pushed off the pier at 7:40 to fish the river for White Perch.....we fished numerous creeks and in Round Bay, caught lots of perch and finally found a area with a larger class of fish in *#%$* Creek. Just about every fish was above 10 1/2" and we were looking at those as small.  I landed 3 nice fish (11, 11 1/2, 11 5/8).....Kim got two more that were 11-1/8 and an 11-1/2."

Obviously, I was fishing in the wrong place yesterday!
