9-12, Fishin' in the Rain....Hampton Roads report

My colleague from work (CT), George Wachsmuth and I have a meeting in Chesapeake VA on Monday and Tuesday so we decided to get down here a little early and get in some fishing. We hired Matty-D Charters, run by Tommy Mattioli. I had met him a few times in the past.....he is an expert fly tier!

Tommy called me while I was on my way down and said the weather pretty much sucked....rain and fog until the evening. Well...George was already in the air and I was already at Pierce's so I said, "let's fish anyway". We had rain gear at the ready. He keeps his boat in Hampton so that's where we met and started our trip. By 12:45pm, we were underway.

The original plan was to fish the CBBT but the visibility was poor so we decided against that. So we fished the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel where George scored an undersized Flounder and a Speckled Trout. But things were slow so Tommy decided to hit the Thimble Shoals Light. We did a little better there as far as numbers of fish but they were all Toads plus one small Black Sea Bass.

All the while, we were getting wet from a very nice soaking rain. I know that the rain was welcomed by all but why on the day we picked to fish? The last time George and I fished together was in Florida at Mosquito Lagoon where the wind was blowing 30+!

Since the soup was getting thicker, we decided to get inside again and headed for the Merrimack/Monitor bride. They have a lot of bridges and tunnels in this area!

Here, we scored more Toads but that was getting old. Finally, George caught a Striper (his 1st ever!) and another Flounder. The Striper/Bluefish bite that we were hoping for never materialized so we called it a day at 5:30 and headed in.....looking forward to a nice dinner at the Surf Rider!

I should have called you, our 3rd guy backed out and we had an open seat. My bad....

Capt Tommy is a wealth of knowledge. As you said, there are plenty of stripers there without having to go to the zoo.

I would like to join you for that... So far my biggest is 34" and it came last weekend at the bay bridge. I'd love to break 40" in the kayak this year!
