8-28-10, Choptak River & Chesapeake Bay report

I met Mo and Dan in Annandale and off we went to Cambridge MD to hook up with Capt. Kevin Josenhans to fish for white perch in the Choptank River and for other salty species in the Bay.

What a beautiful day it was! We were on board by 2 PM and off to the open water we went!

Immediately, we went out to some perchin' water but it seemed that we stopped short of the visible structure (shore line rock wall). All three of us were puzzled but Capt. Kevin said there was plenty of structure below us in the form of rocks and grass. I should have remembered that from my trip with CCA's Sherman Baynard a few years back. The Choptank is littered with rock (old ballast from many years ago and rock walls that are now under water).

It didn't take long to get the catching figured out and the contest was on! We laughed about the fact that I always count perch so I stopped....at around 45 (in about an hour). No more counting for me!

Dan's 10 incher!

Dan hooked in to a ray and we were determined to get him turned around (10lb braid) but the ray straightened the hook and that was it!

Mo then declared, "I want to catch a blue fish"...so out in to the bay we went.  We found some birds and started to catch some small rockfish. Then we moved and the blues were mixed in and we were all catching fish. There was a lot of whoopin' it up going on!

Mo even got a double on a fly that Capt. Kevin tied on!

I was able to land a nice keeper on the jig.

We chased birds for a bit but we also found fish on the sonar and that kept up steadily catching. Kevin then asked if we wanted to leave the fish to try for some top water action or stay where we were. Neither Mo nor Dan had ever caught a keeper striper on top water. No choice there....we headed down to James Island, a 20 minute run.

Once there I got the first hit and hook up but he came unbuttoned as I was bringing him in. Then...it got slow. For 15-20 minutes, nothing was going on but then we started to get some action and both Mo and Dan accomplished their goal!

Stripers on the top!!

Mo got another 1st......

....this needle fish wanted his lure!

We called it a day when the sun went down and made the 1 hour run back to Cambridge...in the dark. Another fun day of fishing with Carl's crew!!

Once again, I highly recommend Capt. Kevin Josenhans. He is a quality guide who is very knowledgeable and gave his all to make sure we had a good time. We did!

Nice day!  That's a long run down to Smith Island.  Glad it didn't blow up for the return trip.

What an awesome trip.

I'm still kicking myself for losing that big one....what a shame...although, it would have presented us with a bit of a dilemma considering we barely had enough room to bring back the fish that we did land.

It definitely was! We had some decent numbers and a few nice sized fish! Always good to get out on new waters.

We were literally across the way from you but it was calm enough so we chose to make the run. I have never been there...it was nice. CCNP looked cool at night!

That was a nice topwater fish....heck, it was a nice fish no matter what. Makes you want to go again.....with bigger coolers!

What a great trip.  That night sleeping on my bed felt like I was still moving on the boat. Thanks Ernie for driving us and showing us such a great time.  I still can't understand why and how I enjoy fishing so much with my personality, But i love it.  Thank you Carl!    What a great picture of Dan with the Biggie.

I just heard back from Capt. Kevin. He said, "That was so much fun fishing with you guys! To see Mo and Dan having such a blast really added to the trip.... I see why you enjoy them as fishing partners".

Yep!

Capt. Kevin remeinded me that we fished at James Island not Smith Island....I just made that correction.

We had that discussion, houndfish or needle......he thinks needle due to size. David Policansky got into some needles on a fly yesterday at EB, could have been hounds......they do stink though, although not as much as what we went through on the way back just above Easton. Holy smokes!

I've seen fish like that in the Potomac up by Mount Vernon. Can they live in freshwater as well? If not, it might have been something else but they look a lot like that.
