12-14-07, CBBT (VA Beach) fishing report

So.....where do I start! You might want to sit back and relax for this one!

Our (Rob Allen, John "Curly the fishing machine" Casale and me) original plan was to leave Ashburn early on Friday morning and fish the afternoon and then get up early and fish a good part of Saturday. But....the weather called for a strong NE wind on Saturday which made us revise our plans. We headed out on Thursday night instead with a plan to fish until the sun started to set. The plan paid off as we woke up to a beautiful Friday with no fog and no wind.

The anticipation ran high as we put the boat in the water at Kiptopeke State Park across the bay from Lynnhaven. It is quite a production as almost 100 boats are trying to do the same thing within a 1 hour period.

The three of us were like little kids at Christmas...we couldn't wait to see what we were going to get. You see he CBBT winter fishing is legendary. It is w WORLD CLASS fishery and we were there!! As we ran to the fishing grounds (about 5-6 miles), Curly kept saying "we will have lines in the water by 7:45. At 7:40, I motored the boat up to one of the pilings and Curly threw out the 1st cast (a Rebel Jointed Spoonbill lure....what else).  BAM....he gets hit and a fight ensues, 10 or 12 minutes later, he lands a 20 pound, 37" striper!! Are you kidding me?? On the 1st cast?? And to top it off, this was Curly's biggest striper ever!! Truly a highlight!

It wasn't long before Rob got into the fracas and he hooked up.....

.....a nice fish!

As the "captain", it's my job to keep the boat in position for the angler's to catch fish. It is especially important when one is fishing between bridge pilings in strong current. But....I did get t cast once in a while and even hooked a few. No...I am not exited to have some pullage!!

I cannot tell you how great this fishing is. The fish are fat and healthy!

For me, one of the highlights of the trip was that I got to fly fish. As a matter of fact, over half of the fish that I caught were caught on a fly. Here is a picture of one of the fattest keepers.

The fishing actually got slow for 2 hours so we moved off the pilings and started to look for birds. With spotters like Rob and Curly, we found fish!

Chasing the birds is pretty cool. We are always trying to figure out their direction (there is bait below them...thus fish but they can be unpredictable. Plus, you have to work with 15-20 other boats and "circle" the flock!! Of course, there are always a few trollers who don't mind going right through the middle and putting the fish down....ARGH!!! But...we managed to find some areas where we were only one of a few boats and Rob proceeded to land this fat cow! This fish was "only" 33" but weighed in at 22 pounds....FAT!!

Time to head back and get ready to go home (and yes, we stopped at Pierce's on the way back).

An absolutely terrific trip with two great fishermen!!

It was a great day indeed....funny, lots of guys on Tidal Fish were reporting a slow day on Friday. The trollers kept looking over at us...."Fish On" was a familiar sound on the boat!

There were several times when we were on fish and no other boats around us....then they would show up. That was also cool!

Ernie, Curly and Rob - great fish!  I'm jelaous - how come you weren't shopping at the mall like the rest of us?  When are you cooking some fish - there's nothing better than fresh rockfish!  I actually made a few casts in Cedar on Saturday but it was too cold to sit and watch a bobber do nothing.

Happy holidays to all - Tom

Ernie -

Thanks for hosting the trip!!

It definitely made some memories - and based on the other reports - it sounds like we did better than most - but then again - we worked hard all day - especially Curly - man ... he is a FISHING MACHINE!!

So  - when is the next trip??

Thanks again -

Rob

- Oh yeah - I need to lose that old hat - I did not realize how goofy it looked!!  But it keeps the head warm.
