Boat motor saga and fix

Not sure if this is where to put this, but thought I would share my saga and eventual fix for motor bogging issue.

Motor Stalling Issue Troubleshoot and Fix

1.    Identified as lack of air or gas

2.    Checked gas cap and saw possible blockage.  Detail cleaned and boat seemed to run better.

3.    Problem started again.

4.    Bought new gas cap.  Checked gas line.  Saw plastic debris from fuel line in filter and in line.

5.    Replaced line and bulb.  Detail cleaned fittings.  Bought new gas tank and installed hose to it.

6.    Boat ran ok for a little while then started to bog and stall again.

7.    Checked motor fuel connector and found plastic pieces stuck in elbow.  Removed, blew out with carb cleaner and re-installed.  Accidentally cross-threaded screw, but reinstalled.

8.    Ran a can of Seafoam Marine and checked fuel line.  Boat ran ok at first, then bogged again on way back.

9.    Ordered new motor fuel connector and fuel filter kit.

10.     During downtime I changed spark plugs and cleaned inside with detail cleaner sticks.  I also removed skeg protector and found skeg piece broken off.  Researched skeg guards and decided that reinforcing and cushioning River runner was best option for now.  Drained lower unit oil and it was milky, but no water.  I ordered new gaskets for screws and found a rubber O ring stuck in top screw hole.  Removed that and refilled gear oil.  Reinstalled reinforced River runner skeg guard.  Cleaned up motor and filled grease fittings.

11.     Had to saw off screw to remove old motor fuel connector.  Installed new one successfully.

12.     Installed new fuel filter and hoses.

13.     Ran motor and FINALLY FIXED!  Ran great.

Re: Boat motor saga and fix

It took months and lots of researching and trial and error.  I was pretty sure it was nothing major like a carburetor issue, so I was able to figure it out.  Hoping it lasts until I can get a new boat so I can get a decent price for mine.

Been down that road too many times. It gets frustrating when you keep thinking you found the problem, only for it to come back. Good job getting her done.

Re: Boat motor saga and fix

Had the same issue with Johnson 175. It just bogged on full throttle. Turned out to be a ground connection on the computer.

Took many parts to get to the real issue. Almost 1400.00 in parts. Two shops and one meter finally pin pointed the issue.

Luckly it exploded shortly after hitting a blue tarp floating in water at 60 mph.

Love collision insurance BTW.

Hope that tarp wasn't Ernie's windbreaker with all they keys in in the pocket I left on the seat.  Ask Ernie.

Boats are great until they suck.

E- John, make sure my jacket is secure, truck keys are in the pocket.
J- No worries, it's good
E- What was that?
J- Crap, your jacket just flew away and is sinking!
E- #@*! but man I'm glad I have a spare truck key on the boat key fob.
