Debbie and I have friends who winter down at the Isle of Palms for 6 weeks every year and we are fortunate to get an invite to stay with them for a few days.
This year, the weather we nothing short of spectacular!
While I don't push for a fishing expedition while on this trip, my friend's SIL is an avid fisherman so the invite comes fairly natural.
Trey lives on Toomer Creek and we fished the upper reaches of the Wando River. We only had a 3.5 hour window. It was around 60dF but a little windy.
The boat is a sweet Maverick HPX with a 150 hp motor. Complete with Jack plate and power pole.
We were just coming out of a cool week and the water was still in the mid 50's. But the area is beautiful! Tides swing between 6-7'!
Ken was the photographer and Remley was the astute fishing dog!
We (Trey) only caught 2 fish. I don't think we had any other bites but it was good not to get skunked!

A few more tid-bits:
- the HPX does 45mph like it's nothing. As a friend said, "slices through waves like a hot knife through butter"
- we saw plenty of fish but once we saw them, they had already seen us and see ya later!
- one of the preferred baits when the water is in the 50's is the Ned rig. I just couldn't get myself to throw it so I threw a gold/red/yellow/brown buck tail jig.

Very cool trip and that rig! Good day to get out and see some beautiful water. Thanks for sharing.

Nice trip! 2 fish and you still had a multi-species day. Just your style. Were you using the trolling motor? Or poling? The trip I posted back the last week in Dec was on the Wando River also. We used a simple 2-3 inch red paddletail with a jig head. It let you fish it either like a Ned rig sitting on the bottom with the tail up or swim it a bit. I have a hard time with Ned rig fishing too!

Trey used both tools. When we started spooking fish with the TM, he poled. Didn't mater. We were in very tight quarters and had to make long shots before they could see us. I fished my bucktail exactly how you described it. Slow on the bottom with a twitch here and there. He used a swing jig.

Ned rigs just like fish'n a grub on a round ball. Just be mindful of the drop.
Looks like it was a great day to enjoy a cigar on the water

When things are slow and they fish the Ned....it's cast and let it sit. ZZzzzzzzz.

And speaking of ned rigs...I saw Brian Lattimer throwing a ned but wacky style. I will try it if it ever warms up around here.
