Fly/streamers made from milkweed?

Last night the kids and I were looking at our current crop of monarch Caterpillars. One of the seed pods on the milkweed plants had opened up. I couldn't help but think that the seed "tails" would make a great fly material. According to the interwebs, they used to stuff life jackets in WW2 with it since it was so buoyant.  This is the only thing a google search turned up:

If you go back in time you'll be amazed at what people have used to tie onto a hook & catch a fish
