My youngest son has been really interested in fishing lately, and I had the day off for running errands before our beach vacation this coming week so I asked him where he wanted to fish in the AM, and he said SNAKEHEAD LAKE! He thinks Mattawoman is called Snakehead Lake...but he now knows it as Mad Woman. He says like Mommy when we don't brush our teeth...mad woman.
We get there at 7:30AM, and it's almost full already. Lots of boats and yaks already by the pads near Nelson Point, and a boat up the creek by the Beach. So I motor past the wall hoping that it was clear along the timber shoreline, I've always done OK here at low tide. I started with a Rico, and nothing until we get to the beaver hut and I score a teeny LMB.
There were already a couple boats up here, but coming on the other side and one by Three River junction. Two kayakers pass me and fish the same shoreline but gave me about 30 yards of buffer, busy day on the creek. I get one more blow up and I have a good one coming toward the boat but it comes unpinned. I just switched out mono for braid on this 6'8 ML/F rod, but I think I liked it better with mono and will switch back.
Saw a few good LMB roaming the edges and grass channels, and this time I brought my senko rod. Tossed a few their way but were already spooked by then. Turned around just before Three River Junction and headed back on the opposite side that we came in, and this time I just threw the senko. Immediate dividends with a decent 2lber.
Then 3 more dinks and, then I felt a thump, I set the hook and the line started racing toward the deep water. I knew it was a good one, and when I got her up, she weighed 4.2lbs. Brandon holding it for size reference.
I'm re-rigging my wacky senko and Brandon thinks it's funny to take a picture of my rear. I need to hit the gym!
Brandon was throwing a teeny popper with no success (watch out IHC captains...he'll be joining soon!), and also a 1" gulp minnow that got a lot of movement, just no takers. So on the way back in, I stop by the sunken timber by the trail wall and he lands a 8" longear sunfish. It was gut hooked and bleeding pretty bad so I cut the line and threw it back in. I'll probably spend more time there panfishing with the boys next time.
Great day, and we leave for Wildwood tomorrow for a week. I'm bringing their rods and crab traps so hopefully I'll have a decent fluke and crabbing report next week.
