Upper Potomac 5/28/19 Topwater time!

I had to wait for the thunderstorm to roll through this morning before heading out,  I got on the river about 9:45am.  Water was green to stained near the shore.  Air temps were in the upper 60's going to 90 degrees in the afternoon.  Level was about 3.5 at Point of Rocks.  I saw the water color was good, so I tried trowing a Whopper Plopper at the tail end of an island.  On my third cast, I caught a little smallmouth that was aggressive.  First topwater fish of 2019!  I ran up to work the next island shoreline and decided to throw a small buzzbait.  It was easy to throw and probably a better match for the forage available.  Not long until I had a chunky 16"er hit the buzzer.

I pretty much floated the island, but anchored a couple of times.  The fish were aggressive and I had 5 on the buzzer and one on a spinnerbait in my first float.  I caught a 14.5 and 2 15's as well as a couple dinks.

The fish would chase down the bait on occasion and I caught at least 2 by slowing or dropping the bait after they missed it the first time.  I ran a little further up and took advantage of the shade line to catch a few more.  The coolest bite of the day was my biggest fish at 17.25" that chased the buzz bait as I was reeling it in fast to cast again.  It missed, but I dropped the bait and it grabbed the lure near the boat.  Super dark fish.

I saw some smallies chasing bait, eating something on the surface and saw one big one jump completely out of the water hitting something on top.  The bites slowed down after it got hot.  I ended up with 11 total, 9 on topwater!.  I was getting hot and got off the water by 3:45pm.  The water was cloudier as the day moved on from the rain we got.  I will try again tomorrow morning and see if they are still chasing.
