5/9/19 Upper Potomac

I was watching the forecast and figured I could get a half day in at least before more rain came.  I got out early and was on the water a little after 6:00am.  The water was a little higher than I would normally go (just over 7 foot at Point of Rocks) and pretty stained/muddy.  It was go or wait until maybe next week with more rain coming though.  My plan of trying topwater was pretty much out with the high flow and muddy water.  I decided to run up to a flooded island.  I fished there for at least an hour.  Threw a chatterbait, spinnerbait, swimbait and crankbaits.  I finally got the skunk out with a chunky 15"er that hit the crankbait.

After no more bites, I decided to run up Goose Creek to see if the water was clearer.  It was a little better , so I ran as far as I could to work the flow.  I put on a different crank and hooked up after a few casts working a current seam.  It was a better fish and measured 18".

I got snagged and lost that bait, fell and broke a rod and moved around the creek before deciding to go back to that spot again.  This time I threw the swimbait and ended up catching a 13" and 12" fish before eating my lunch.
After lunch I tried a few casts there, but decided to move back to the river.  I ended up back on the island and managed a 14.5"er that thunked a tube behind a rock.

I tried there for a while, but it started to look like it might rain.  I ran down a bit to check out the next island.  It was muddy and it started to rain a little, so I decoded to run past the rain.  I was able to get out of the rain, but the clouds followed me and it was almost 3:00pm. so I headed back to the ramp.  I got off the water by 3.  Nice cloudy day.  I was happy with my success given the water conditions.

6'+ is the new norm. Good job getting some.

Bad deal falling and breaking a rod...

Lots more rain coming on Mother's Day!

At least it was a cheaper one.  Had to try.

That could have been a story all in itself.  Glad to hear that only a rod broke and nothing else

Re: 5/9/19 Upper Potomac

Yeah, I have had some tough experiences trying to get baits unstuck with heavy current.  Either anchor catches or trolling motor flips me into the current.  I lost my balance and fell into the rods.  I was lucky it was not worse.  When I got up I had 3 crankbaits hanging from my pants.  I am a little sore today.  All part of fishing.  It is now a contact sport.
