This was my first trip out with the boat this year, I've been meaning to get out sooner, but life and work get in the way. Got on the water at around 7:30AM and there were 8 trailers in the lot already. The sky was beautiful, and almost no wind, just a slight breeze here and there.
Saw this guy swoop down from a tree and land on this log. The pic was taken from about 300 yards away, fully zoomed so sorry if it's a bit grainy.
The water was a little muddy, and very stained, visibility was probably 4-6". Main creek water temp was 65-66 degrees. I dropped to about 60 as we pushed farther up the creek, likely from the cold rains we had last night. Our first stop was at the bike trail wall, where there's a cut through the pads, I had good success in that cut before last year while the water was muddy. I threw a black/blue chatterbait and my dad was throwing a green pumpkin chatterbait. Nothing until we exited that cut through where it transitioned from spatterdock to the grassline. I started to throw into the pockets in the grass and told my dad he should do the same. Yeah, my dad didn't do that at all and was throwing 4-5' off the edge and next thing you know, he was hooked up in a major way. I saw the brownish/yellowish flash and he was fighting a snakehead with his 6'6 MH spinning rod. She weight 6.3lbs and I think she was full of eggs, big soft belly. We let her go to see another day.
Well, my plan of attack also worked kind of...the grass transitioned to some timber and I got my first one at 3.2lbs on the black/blue chatterbait. I lost 2 more at the boat, both of which were pretty big as well. So the pattern of the day was chatterbaits near timber or vegetation transitions.
The sun came out around 12:30PM and the wind picked up too. I then tried a spinnerbait, but no hits. I also tried some topwater frogging and that was futile as well. Called it around 1PM and headed in. Talked to a couple of boats and they had been blanked all morning so I feel fortunate we got 2 in the boat. In all, we saw about 10 boats and 4 kayaks out there.
