12-1-18, Lower Potomac River

As low as you can go...I am sure we were in the bay at times.

Greg and I drove together and met Paul and Andrew at the Pt. Lookout State Park Marina ramp to fish with Capt. Dale (Fishamajig Charters) at 8:45a.

Air temps were in the 40's most of the day with the water temps around 46-47. It was cloudy all day with little wind. The bay had some chop in it but not too bad. And the weatherman was right, it rained (misted) for an hour or so around noon.

The fish were all hunkered down at the bottom.

The 1st fish was Andrew's...

...followed by Greg's blue cat.

Then Paul got on the board with a nice white perch (which will be made into a sammie in the very near future).

1st three fish are different species? Whowouldhavethunkit?

Me? I was just watching for a while!

We had to work the fish to entice them. As mentioned before, they were hunkered down but we managed to catch some in almost every spot.

And I am happy to report that we caught more than a dozen keepers (>20") and took 7 of them home with us.

The big fish were Ernie and Greg at 26". There was 1-2 at 25" and the rest of the keepers were 20-22".

While a few small fish were caught, most of the others were 15-19" little footballs. Always a great fight with lighter tackle.

We estimate that we caught 70 fish or so...

While not a red hot bite, they were all earned. Capt. Dale kept looking and working on getting us on fish!

There was a lot of smack talk as well, generally initiated by yours truly.

At one point, we were in the fish...thick! I caught 3 on three drops and then we get a call that some bigger fish were being caught about 3 miles away. I stalled as long as could as I did not want to leave the fish but we made the run and found...1 fish. Oh well....

We came back to where the big marks were and it was devoid of fish. And the birds had gone away too so we called it a day since Dale had a few fish to clean.

We had a great time...lots of laughter.

Great crew!

How many times do I have to tell you don't leave fish to find fish. big_smile

(ducking for for cover since I pushed to leave. Very unlike me BTW.)

Apparently, we were a day early. Capt. Dale's crew (Jamie Gold was one of them) hammered them today including a slob 35"er!

Nice job guys. Was the captain mostly looking for fish on the depthfinder or chasing birds?

Both, especially when it was souped in and you couldn't see very far.

I know that on Sunday, they found fish and there were no boats (another tall tale sign) or birds around.
