8/14/18 Upper Potomac

I followed Ernie to the ramp (not planned) and told him and Bill they could fish the closer island.  I was on the water about 6:15am or so and tried the next island up, but got nothing on topwater.  I decided to head upriver and try elsewhere.  I fished another island and after about 15 minutes of trying different lures, I hooked a nice 17.5"er on a Keitech with an underspin jig.

I hooked one more smaller fish there before moving.

I tried the MD shore, but it was more muddy,  I caught this one aggressive sunfish on a crank.

I went though a dry spell and was just dragging the chain.  It got windy (blowing downstream), so I was still drifting pretty good.  I saw Ernie coming upriver and I hooked a 14.25" on a spinner called "The Snagler".  Yep, it was desperate times with muddier water coming downriver.

I talked to Ernie and they had been struggling to find the fish after the morning bite as well.  After I ate my lunch, I had drifter below Ernie and Bill and managed one tiny bass about 5 inches that hit a crankbait.  Then I heard Ernie whistle that he caught one.  I tried a rocky stretch downriver, but it was muddy, so I ran back up above Ernie.  I called him and he said he caught two on the bottom.  Light bites.  I was using crankbaits and managed two 13-14" fish in that section before floating further down.  I could get no more bites on the crank, so I was trying different baits.  In a last Hail Mary, I hooked up a Roadrunner underspin with bucktail.  About my 3rd cast, I got a solid take and it was a fighter.  It jumped and I did not see it (I was untangling the net), but it sounded large.  I got it close to the boat and saw it was a really solid fish with shoulders.  I finally got it in the net and it was a super chunky 18.5"er.

It was 1:30pm and I tried a few more casts, but was happy to end the day with that chunk.  The bite was tough, but there were fish in the swift murky water.   I ended up with 7 or 8 smallies and the one sunfish.  I got off the water by 2:00pm.  Nice air temps and partly cloudy, so a comfortable day to be out on the river.

Nice job on the Hail Mary! I was hoping that we would get a big one on our final drift (where Curly and I did well the other day) but it was not to be.

Nice job! Do you tie on these lures on the water or do you have 87345923874023 rods on board with different lures ready to go?

lol He has more tackle on board than a tackle shop! I should have taken a picture of the 20+ lures he had sitting on top of his tackle bag when we stopped to see him.

I will admit that I take 6-7 rods with me when I go....

I usually have 6-7 rods rigged and go from there.  I use a snap for most hard baits and tie the rest.

Great report and pics! Every time I start thinking about chasing river smallies we get another monsoon.
