Northern Neck Spanish Mackerel 8/11

Launched at 8am and started trolling right away. Wasn't long before I hooked my first spanish.

The bite was hot and I had a limit by 10:30! Got them all on Clark spoons.

After that I anchored up on a dropoff to use up some leftover chum hoping to find a stray cobia, but  had no luck with that. Apparently they moved into the lower bay after we got all that rain a couple weeks ago.

I was off the water at 3 with a bunch of fish to clean.

Holy mackerel! That's a nice load of fish. How fast were you trolling, looks like you were haulin'!

And how are you gonna cook 'em?

I troll for Spanish at about 5 mph to 6.5. I wonder how fast you are going?

Re: Northern Neck Spanish Mackerel 8/11

I was trolling at 6 knots, so about 7mph. One rod set up with a #1 planer and the other was rigged with a 4oz inline sinker. Both got bit equally. I used silver, gold, and silver/green flash Clark spoons but color didn't seem to matter.

This was my first time ever trolling for spanish so unfortunately it can only go downhill from here lol

Nice job

Guess they are edible.  In CA you can catch allot of mackerel, but no one eats them because they are so red, bloody and gamey.  Must be a different breed on the east coast?

Well yes and no.. they do not freeze well. But they smoke very well and can be frozen after that. They make one heck of a good dip..

They are excellent on the grill fresh too.

Yesterday I ate one fillet with just salt & pepper to get an idea of the taste. Then I cooked two more with with a mayo/mustard coating under the broiler. That was really good, probably will make some more like that tonight.  I also gave a bunch to a co-worker who said he's gonna grill them. Anything not eaten by tomorrow night will go on the smoker.

When you hit 'em again, stop and throw heavier, shinny metal at them. Fast, jerky retrieves. Fun fishing!

Re: Northern Neck Spanish Mackerel 8/11

We trolled hard all day today, in the same place, and just picked up two small Blues.  Fished the Eastern side of the channel where it falls from twenty feet to 60 feet.  Probably thirty boats doing exactly the same thing spread over three or four miles.  Fabulous weather, flat calm, no fish.  Oh well, great father and son day.
