6-28-08, Upper Potomac River float report

Eight of us (Kent Williams, Paul Kordon, Joel Williams, Jeff English, Karina English, Rod Idle & Paul Najdzin) met at the Point of Rocks ramp at 8:30 this morning (I know, bankers hours....ask Kent!!) to float Lander to PoR. We got on the water at 9:15 and all the boats scattered! We had 2 canoes, 2 kayaks, a pontoon and a kayak/canoe hybrid.

The day started out a bit cloudy and then it got sunny and then it rained a little and then it got hot and sunny. It was PERFECT!!

Here is one of Kent's (Pastor of Christian Fellowship Church in Ashburn) early fish, a feisty smallie!

One of the great things about fishing the way we did is that you can cool off by doing a little wading as demonstrated by Paul K.

I caught a few (10-12 inches) early and then I hooked in to this nice 15" smallie that hit a BMP jig!

"Rookie" Rod (Associate Pastor of Christian Fellowship Church) finally got into the action and landed a smallie while rock fishing!

Kent (the perch master) was a bit jealous!

Paul N, who caught 11 in total, landed this nice one near me.

I am sure he will post the picture of the 18", 3 lb beast later!

Paul K (Worship Leader at Christian Fellowship Church) and Joel caught 20 between them....here they are floating down the river.

This next picture was taken right before Kent and Rod tipped the canoe and fell in! No one was hurt and all the gear was saved. Once we realized that, everyone had a good laugh!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0745.jpg

But the last laugh was Rod's! After they dunked themselves, they waded a bit and I heard Rod say, "Oh Oh, I am hung up". I figured I needed to go help but his line was moving and the fight ensued! I paddled up to get a shot and here it is!

I believe that Mr. Idle is hooked on smallies and the last thing he said before we left was, "that was fun, let's do it again". I should say so; his fish was a healthy 17.5 incher!

Finally, it was time to go when this site came to view.

The unofficial final tally:

Ernie- 8
Kent- he lost track due to his excessive blue gill catching
Paul K- 11
Joel- 9
Jeff- 20
Rod- he lost track but got the big 17.5 incher!
Karina- 4
Paul N- 11

The Upper Potomac is a great place to fish, very scenic and serene.  A great time was had by all!! The best part.....the people!

Can't wait to do it again!

I bet Paul will be back smallie fishing when he gets back from jersey after the holiday!

How many "fish stories" do you think are being told here!

Thanks Paul N for these great shots!

Ernie,

Thanks again for the invite. I had a great time. The trip was the perfect blend of beautiful scenery, fun fishing and great people. You've got to love those river smallies. They are like athletes in the moving water and just full of energy. It was nice to cap the day with a good fish.

Although Karina did catch a few smallies the pic you have of her above is of what I thought to be a nice bluegill from the description she gave to me. After closer inspection of the picture you can clearly see the longer blue marking on the gill cover which probably makes it either a red breasted or longear sunfish. Nice catch for a first time kayaker!

I think I recognize that big rock Rod and Kent  stood on, Ernie! smile

Congrats on the excellent day.

How did the Ultimate boat handle the swift water?

I am sure Paul will chime in but for that part of the river, that boat was more than adequate. He fished well and seemed to handle all of the water that was given to us.

Re: 6-28-08, Upper Potomac River float report

That's about right Ernie, it did perform well in that stretch of the river. I'm sure that a more streamlined kayak would be easier to paddle upstream but I got around just fine. It has a retractable skeg and I definitely got to see how effective it is in helping the boat track straight.

It's not a self bailing hull and a bit shallower than a canoe so i was concerned about the rapids but I went through that one set dry. I'm sure it would be fine in a bit bigger rapid than the ones there. The boat naturally takes some water from the paddle, climbing in and out etc, and the rain added to that so i had more in it than ever before and felt no difference. I may start to carry a bailing sponge in the future just in case.

The highlights of this boat are that the seat keeps your butt dry even with water in the boat and it's stabile enough to stand and fish, as I did the majority of the time.

The boat has also got good mojo. wink I've put quite a few bass in it this season so it won't be going up for sale any time soon. smile

I think I'm going to add the anchor trolley so that I could put a drag anchor or chain down safely
