6-25-08, Upper Potomac River float report

I was supposed to go out fishing on Friday (Checapeake Bay) but the Captain sold his boat so we rescheduled for July.......so I took off Wednesday instead and floated the Upper Potomac from Lander to Point of Rocks.

The weather was perfect!

I met Pete Pfotenhauer and Mike Craven at the PoR lot and we shuttled up to Lander. Mike just had shoulder surgery 9 months ago and is having back surgery in a few months. He needed this trip but he was also in a bit of pain. Here he is as we got started.

The early bite was sparse as we tried to figure out what the pattern was going to be. At one point, Pete decided he needed to get on higher ground to see what was going on in the water.

We started catching small fish and each of us had landed a half dozen smallies by 1 PM. Pete and Mike had fish up to 13.5 inches at that point. Here my largest one (didn't make 12").

Mike had to take off due to his medical issues but Pete and I stayed back. Right before he left, Mike called me over and wanted a picture....I obliged!

He (Pete) started to catch some bigger fish using a white weighted fluke, So I switched to that too. At this point, he out caught me 20 to ZERO! I could not land a fish...plenty of hits and hook ups but nothing in the boat. After catching a nice fish, Pete asked (yelled) me if I could come up to take a picture. Sure", I said! I was 250yards downstream from him, in fast water. But I have been working out and got there quickly (he was holding the fish in teh water). As I got to him, the fish lurked and popped right out of hs grip. Are you kidding? All that paddling for no picture?     roll

A few minutes later, Pete cauht another decent one and this time we took the picture near sghore.

I think I know what I was doing wrong and I will try to correct it on the next trip!

Great way to spend a day!big_smile

Josh,

He is in pretty bad shape....but he was stoked to be out there.

I was showing him my new Custom Rod by Josh and he says...I know Josh! He was very pleased and proud of your work!

BTW, we went to the same high school and grew up in the same general area.

Re: 6-25-08, Upper Potomac River float report

Glad to get out with you, Ernie.

It was great to get Mikie on a short float before he goes under the knife again. He's hurting a lot to bail on the afternoon of fishing.

Glad we stuck it out. Funny how our speaker at PRSC described the presentation we used to find fish in the afternoon.

Sorry about that one that escaped before his mugshot. You enjoyed the paddle back up through swift water, I could tell.

Josh's old yak works well for you on that float.

How did Saturday go after our scouting trip?

Here's the big one that didn't get away Wednesday. This one went 17.

Pete,

We had a nice outing Saturday! I finally got two on a fluke....I will master this technique! I caught a nice 12 incher on rattle trap (see....I did listen to our speaker). Next trip out is on July 4th (early)....I am thinking fly rod only!

Ernie, I fish a fluke more than all my other lures combined in warm water. They are terrific baits for covering water when the fish can be anywhere.
