Beaverdam on 10/12

A friend and I decided to hit BDR yesterday from 9am to noon. Although he had been there since it re-opened, it was my first time back. A beautiful day for kayaking, but not so good for fishing. Water temp was 65 and visibility about 2-3'. My friend caught 2 largemouths (a pounder and one that was a little over 2lbs) on 10" worms in 15-20' deep water. I did my usual performance at BDR--and got skunked. Water was calm and the day was peaceful...until about 11:30am when 25 4th and 5th grade girl scouts arrived for a kayaking seminar on the water. They were having fun, but they were noisy so it was time to go home. Water level looked much like I remembered it so I guess the recent rains have filled it to near full. Despite the lack of bites, it was still a great day to be on the water at BDR.

Re: Beaverdam on 10/12

Thanks for the report...I did not get a chance to fish it this year but made a couple of visits. Glad it's open for another year and then the new BDR will come in place.

That must've been you guys I saw over there.  I was over by the far shore.  Nothing happening there except a perch on the way there.  I tried the deeper water for a bit with a jig.  After I left there I was able to catch two small largemouths in 6-8ft on crankbaits.

Re: Beaverdam on 10/12

No kayak for me so I shore fish. From the Mt. Hope parking lot I go down the right woods path (have not tried to the left yet) and come out on a point at the opening to a cove. Pretty big rocks in the water and it looks to be 10-20 feet deep going farther out. What baits will work best? I am thinking crank baits, jigs, maybe a swimbait or a texas rigged worm/lizard with a heavier bullet? Any advice for a shore guy? Also I thought trying top water and buzz baits if I get out there early AM.

Re: Beaverdam on 10/12

mkupchyk, I fish from a kayak and focus on deeper structure and I'm partial to texas rigged brush hogs, jig & craw combo and crankbaits. When the fish are in the coves I've caught fish on weightless soft jerkbaits like bass assassins, weightless lizzards, buzzbaits  etc. Your best fishing from shore will happen in the spring during pre-spawn and spawn.

I've fished the reservoir 4 times in the past week or so. I had two slow trips with only 1 or 2 fish in less than ideal conditions, and two good trips with 5 fish each trip with the biggest one weighing exactly 4lb 15oz both times. I swear it looks like the same fish. My highlight from this past Saturday was getting 2 smallmouth bass in 3 casts. Both were between 2.5 and 3 lb.

Here's a video of the SMB. The second one didn't seem to like my net. ;-)   https://youtu.be/S7OuDORNGCo

Ha. Yeah, my editing department stinks. ;-)

A year from now it will drive me crazy thinking I caught fish in November so I fixed it.
