Beaver and Mossy Creek 5/19

The original plan was to head straight to Mossy Creek and hope to not get skunked for the third time in a row. This changed when I went to Orvis the day before to prepare. They strongly suggested I go to Beaver Creek if I was able to get a pass. When I told them I wouldn't get there until after 7am they said it was a slim chance they would have any more passes left.

The next day I left Ashburn at 5:20. I was still planning on going straight to Mossy and not even trying to get a Beaver Creek pass. As I got closer I decided it wouldn't hurt to try and get a pass. I got to the small country store around 710. The woman informed me they had only sold one of the four passes for the day so I bought one and headed to the creek. I was not sure what to expect before I got there. There was a combination of wooded area that was hard to get to unless you waded and wide open cow pastures where it was almost impossible to get hung up.

I started out the morning with a PMX dry fly and a no name streamer I picked up for a dollar at a fly fishing convention with no luck. After about 45 minutes I changed to a Kreelex which is the fly recommended for this time of year.

I head up to a promising pool and first cast I catch a 14 inch rainbow which is bigger than most of the rainbows I have caught before this trip.

The cast right after this I caught a 16 inch rainbow and I am feeling pretty good

The clouds from the morning had dispersed and it was a bright sunny day with a cloud here and there. I was beginning to think the clouds were key to success and began to lose confidence. Finally I come up to a section of shallow riffles that was about shin deep and get absolutely slammed by something big. My drag on my 6wt was screaming and the fish managed to get hung up on a log. I had to walk across the creek to get it undone and the fish went on another run. after about 5 mins of chaos I finally land it and it turned out to be an 18 inch rainbow. My new personal best.

I fish the rest of the public section of Beaver Creek and catch a fallfish but that was it. It was around 1230 when I got to my car and headed to Mossy Creek. It looked promising as the water was significantly stained. I didn't see anything for about an hour except this cow that was stuck in the mud. I tried to find someone to tell but there was nobody to be found.

I finally took my Mossy Creek skunk off with this nice 15 inch brown trout on the kreelex which was another personal best for me.

I ended up getting many more short strikes from fish comparable in size but for some reason they were not getting the hook in their mouth. I ended up leaving Mossy around 5:15 and getting home around 7. Overall it was a great day with 2 personal bests and I cant wait to got back again this summer.

Any time within the next 3 months I am game. Fishing is only going to heat up as the summer and hatches continue.

And thanks guys! it was a great trip. Definitely worth the 2 hour drive.
