Pelagic Pursuits

Left OC on Saturday around 8am out to the Balto canyon in a 24 foot Silverhawk. Sea's had a swell from the hurricane down south that was very hard to keep  a direct heading out. Ended up north and about 10 miles short of the Canyon and decided to put lines out and work slowly toward it. The pounding from leaping off the swells was too much.

15 minutes later fish on.. and 2 more in the next hour. All false albocore sadly. But fun.

No bites for the next 5 hrs. Even setup for shark for an hour or two.. no luck.
Sunday we left at 5am and sea swells where more manageable, but still got a few hard landings here and there.

Lines in at the canyon at 8am and zippo till about 11am when a blue marlin crashed and dumped a reel faster than you could imagine. Fought it for about 4 minutes till the hooked slipped the bill. Nada after that... smooth ride back tired and beat.. bones ache today and I wonder, when I could do it again.. Imm ready.

Re: Pelagic Pursuits

Captain,
Thanks for the report.
I prefer False Albacore over other tuna for the dinner/sushi.
Your report remind of those good days.  My friend and I were and still are sea-sick in the ocean.  We used tow a 28 footer with tuna tower to OC, took Dramamine, and fished the Cannon trolling without a hit.

I was the only could climb up to the tuna tower by grabbing wet aluminum ladder after many beer.  While swaying side to side, I was looking for any signs of the fish.  Without the help of Dramamine, I couldn’t do all that

Though we always manage to find some 20 foot boats catching yellow and blue fin tuna about 24 mile off OC on the way back.  There we anchored and chunked butter fish and caught many tuna next to the 20 footers.

Our boat cruised at 20mph in the ocean that was too slow for us, and we started to think buying a deep v center console that cruise at 50mph.  This never materialized because we fished mainly Chesapeake Bay, and the cost (time and gas) of towing and fishing OC.  And wives prefer the wide Cuddy Cabin fishing boat.

Thanks for reminding of those good days with friends.

Joe

Re: Pelagic Pursuits

Great report and I think I am a little dizzy after Joe's commentary....

Another great adventure!

But eating False Albacore? Joe- I have not heard of people eating them.

Time to go fishin' again!
