Tyler and I met up with a friend from his school and his Dad up at the Rapidan this weekend for an overnight camping/trout fishing expedition.  Amazing weather, great people, and our first flyfishing trip ever made this a great weekend.  Thanks Ernie for lending me your 3wt fly rod.  It was perfect and so easy to cast.

Whoever said there were "parts" of the road to Rapidan that could get pretty rough, were putting it lightly.  I was cruising along on the dirt road and came over one hill and almost got air as I jumped over the deep pothole just on the downhill side!  Luckily the truck has pretty good suspension and did great.  It was actually pretty fun once I figured out that this road was going to take some slow and steady planning in certain spots to get from point A to point B.  We met our friends at the last campsite before the cabins and set up the tent and got fishing.









The Rapidan was beautiful.  I think the water level was a bit low.  But it was pool after pool with waterfall after waterfall.  Of course Tyler went off with his friend and caught 5 or 6 Brook Trout that evening.  I was left to figure this out on my own......I didn't.  I just wasn't quick enough setting the hook.  I must have had 15 hits but was too slow or had too much slack in the line.  I couldn't set the hook.  So I went to bed Saturday night skunked.

We woke up at 6am and hit the river early before anybody else could spook the fish.  Tyler was great and acted as my guide to make sure I caught a fish.  I think he realizes the happier he makes me on these trips, the more trips we take.  He is a smart kid.  Finally, I got the first fish of the morning and first Brook Trout of my life.  A nice 8 incher.



I caught another smaller one too.  Tyler caught about 4 or 5 more fish that morning.  His biggest was this beautiful 9 incher.

I have a new underwater camera that takes video and I wanted to try it out.  The water was so clear.  So, the following is a video of the release of the trout underwater

Great trip.  I think we are going to make this an annual thing.  Maybe try to do it again in the Fall.
