Probable drowning at Beaverdam, search currently in progress

A little before 3pm rescue got a call for an overturned boat and people in the water.  At 2:57pm the caller reported seeing one go under and not surface.   There was a 49 year old man, 7 year old son and a dog.  Reportedly the people cannot swim and apparently no PFDs.  Someone was able to rescue the boy and dog.

There are three rescue boats in the water, the sheriff's dive team boat on scene and the Fairfax Co helicopter in the air.

They are primarily searching the cove area about 200 yards NW of the dock.

They weren't interested in my kayaks or my knowledge of the reservoir.

What really surprised me was a lack of sonar electronics on the boat which would be really useful for underwater searching.

Per a news story:

The missing man’s name is Tony DiGiovanna. His son Michael was rescued, and his mother, Deanna, was with the son at Inova Loudoun hospital this afternoon. He apparently is okay. The couple have three other children.

Brad Odenheimer is the teen who rescued the little boy.

Turns out this guy was a neighbor of my sister in Broadlands and went to St. Theresa's church. Sad story.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!
