11-12-07, Potomac River (DC) report

Fishing on Veterans Day (observed) has been a tradition of mine and today was no exception. This morning, I met up with Jeff English and Rod Idle (1st time fishing in DC).....

The weather was a bit iffy as it was cold and rainy when we left Ashburn but Jeff had checked the radar and assured me that it was going to stop. I brought the Bimini top anyway just in case.

When we got to the ramp at Gravely point, we noticed that Curly was already there…what else is new!! Within a few minutes, he called us and already had a fish in the box.

Our plan was to troll to locate the fish and then we were going to throw an arsenal at ‘em! Jeff took control of the helm which freed me up to man the 6 lines we had out. It didn’t take too long and we managed a few ice ones while trolling including Rod’s 1st striper ever......

.... as well as a very nice, fat 23 incher!

Here is Curly, the one man fishing machine!

At this point we stated throwing lures and for the 1st time hat I can recall, I caught a striper while casting…but he was not a keeper so back in the drink he went. After 45 minutes of nothing, we started to troll again. We managed one more while trolling and then we started jigging again. This time, I was able to catch an elusive white perch in the fall.

This little thing hit a lure as big as he was!

Nice boat!!

Since Rod had never seen DC from the water, we took him on a ride upriver hoping to perhaps catch a few up at the Kennedy Center. We made a couple of passes trolling and nada so we worked the wall casting and managed a very small large mouth bass that was not even deserving of a picture. There was no more action after that so we headed on in after a very nice day on the water.

The bottom line is that I had a great day out on the water with two excellent guys!

On the way back home, we stopped at the Bea Scene café and dropped off two stripers. Huy and Julio are having a striper diner tonight!
