Four of us (Curly, Travis and Travis' neighbor) met up at POR at 0630 this morning for a yak float. We got to Lander in no time and we were fishing shortly there after.
The water was at a good level and was in pretty good condition.
I heard Curly yell "Fish on" and he landed the 1st fish, shorty thereafter, Travis landed a nice 14" smallie. I hooked up with a shorty a few minutes later.
I caught a few more but it was slow....until the riffles after the 1st set of rocks!
I was using a Case Salty Shad on a circle hook with no weight and they liked it.
Then I lost the last one I had so I put on a few other shad like baits and still caught 'em.
We heard the trains go by. heard the cows mooing. say a couple of ospreys and evn had an eagle do a fly by.....nice setting.
Most of my fish were caught in faster water. I probably caught 10 up to 13" in the fast, clear water. Add another 5-6 to the mix and I had some nice action on my relatively light tackle. As well, I lost many as they would immediately go to the weeds or under the rocks when hooked. I only had a few jumpers. This one was ready.
We ended the float around 11:20 and by noon, we were all on the road back home as it started to rain.
Great day on the Potomac!

I ended up with 7 smallies, one of which was a beast. Measured 18.75" and was a solid 3.5 lbs. Didn't have my camera with me, so no pic. Great morning on the water and didn't get any rain until in Leesburg on the way home .

That's a VERY nice fish! Congrats!
I had two big ones come unbuttoned before I could land them. On jumped but hard to tell how big.

Looks like you guys had a nice time this morning. I've never been to POR before but it looks like there is a nice ramp from the picture..

That's the Lander ramp. There is also one on the VA side by the Rt15 bridge (where we took out) and new really nice one is probably close to being finished, if it's not already, on the MD side a little bit downstream of Rt15.
My first smallie was the biggest. 14"
I caught several like this.
Caught dozens of these, this is one of the largest.
Another decent smallie 13"
Also lost what looked to be a LMB around 14" and another smaller LMB struck and missed right in front of me.
Jason had a good time. Something like only his second fishing outing since he was young.

Nice report and great pics guys.
I was all set to chase some smallies this week, but now the rain has put that plan off for a while.

Perfect, this will give the snakies access to the rest of MD and VA. It's already a given that I'll be missing a few weeks of fishing, but what will I read if the rest of you don't post? Not to fear, Curly will be working over the Village, just a little closer to the path.
