Deale, Chesapeake Bay report, 8-20-11

The original plan was for Mo and I to fish for WP today to get qualified for the SRRKC White Perch tourney. But....Mo had to work so Curly and Herman joined me. The forecast was great so we planned to run the bay and burn a few gallons of fuel while chasing birds.

We ran across the bay and into Eastern Bay looking for birds but did not see much. After a bit of that, we decided to hit Poplar Island and on the way there we encountered some breaking bait.....we did not catch any fish. Then we worked the east side of Poplar (sod banks) with the same non success. Lastly, we hit the rip rap point and Curly said he might throw something light to try to get a white perch. I told him there were no white perch there. Instantly, Herman declares he has a fish on and I was astonished that a nice 11"+ white perch would take a 5" striper lure!

An outstanding 1st White perch....go figure!

We then moved to the other side after seeing some birds and we all connected with blues and stripers!

Curly caught a keeper striper.....

...and a teeny one!

We then got out on the bay and chased birds and caught lots of schoolie stripers and blues. Action was fast as we were running a lot....here is a double (one of each) that I caught.

We decided it was time to head back in and get some white perch. On the way out, we noticed a boat that had run aground on the breakwater.

Not a good situation. It seems that this boat was in the shop for repair and the mechanic decided to take it for a run after dark. He missed the opening and ran aground!!    roll I understand he was arrested. It took 2 Tow Boats to get the boat off the wall and back in to port.

OK...back k to fishing.

We worked the wall with the UL stuff and plucked out a bunch of fish. Some did better than others but most fish were big. We wanted to keep about a half dozen 10"+ WP for Herman....we ended up with almost 20! We can't add!

We called it quits and declared it another great day on the water. Smooth seas, warm temps and light breezes......and nice boat!

Ernie,
Good to see you again. Great photos! You certainly have the WP figured out. We found very few Spot while searching for bait yesterday, so the Rockfish catching was limited. The mechanic who ran that boat aground must have been DWI?

I wonder if you could have jigged some up?

I believe that was the case. When I talked to the owner, he was very careful with his words despite the fact that his boat was a mess. There was a significant gash in the hull on the bow keel.
