A good pair of fishing forceps and a line cutter. I have these on a lanyard around my neck. Some small fly boxes so you don't have to bring your arsenal out each time.

That some basic stuff.

Re: New to fly fishing

I use mostly poppers on the lakes - I'm new to tying so haven't ventured here yet (only dry flies and nymphs).  I get mine at LL Bean at Tysons (Orvis has some but better selection at LL Bean).  Here is what I've been using:

This looks like a solid assortment - http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/40993?feat=3946-GN3

If you need any help hit me up .... I'm out there a few days most weeks w/ the fly rod.

Re: New to fly fishing

A pair of water shoes so you can fish Goose Creek and the Upper Potomac!

Fly line - Tippet (which can also just be a 4lb string of mono) - forceps, line cutters, floppy hat, fly vest is recommended to organize all the aforementioned stuff...

In terms of flies - you can get away with topwaters now, but I also like streamers which are weighted and you strip retrieve to entice a bite.

I am relatively new to it as well and I have made due with the above tackle list.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Ascot and a house in the Hamptons are also required.

Re: New to fly fishing

If you can make it to the PRSC event on Wednesday evening at Riverbend, there will be 1-2 FFF Certified instructors with a few long poles showing folks how to use them.

No cost....free food....no membership required.

Re: New to fly fishing

A good pair of polarized sunglasses, no vest-those have gone the way of the Dodo-get a chest pack, straight mono instead of small spools of tippet (20lb, 12lb, 8lb)
