Fished Point Lookout State Park Sunday afternoon. I missed the tail end of fishing with some MKF guys that had a slow morning. I guess it was better getting there late because I had some decent action.
I started out bucktail/gulp jigging the inlet of Lake Conoy, I had one little nibble that took the tail off. I figured blues or crabs, so I kept moving. I headed out towards the beach and jigged some more but the crab pot minefield was getting on my nerves. I decided to head out to the NOAA buoy where I caught my keeper flounder last year and set up outside of the crab pots.
First drift I picked up a nice croaker on a 1oz spro white bucktail with a pink gulp teaser. It was weird, the quicker I did small taps with the jig the quicker I'd get hit. Makes sense but just seemed odd for me for croaker to hit it like that. I had a few hits that I would have sworn were flounder but they didn't stick. I put out another rod with a 2/0 circle hook and another size 4 j-hook above it just seeing what bait they would hit. I tried fishbites bw and squid, night crawlers, bull minnows, and white gulp but no takers. When I put pink on the circle hook I started getting hits there too. I think my rod holder caught at least 5. I caught about a dozen croaker total and kept 6 for dinner between 12-15". I had one absolute beast that was 18" or 19" on the jig but I didn't get to measure it properly because it gill raked me trying to throw it on the clip while also trying to reel in another fish. Sounds hot and heavy, but that was the only double and it only happened because I was trying to film some with my camera… always the way it works, do something else and the fish come!
The wind picked up and made my drift pretty interesting even with my drift sock out so I headed back to the beach area to try for flounder again. Slow drifted and jigged for 45 mins. No luck, packed it in and headed back for the no-see-um blitz. It was a nice day on the water even if it was a little rough. Here's some pictures and a video.

Nice report and pics!
I can't wait to get back on my yak this Summer. Cape Henlopen flatties are calling my name.

I liked Cape Henlopen, but last time I went there I got skunked hard! Hopefully next time will be better.
I was really hoping for some flatties at PLO, but it wasn't in the cards I guess. Oh well, big croakers fight harder anyway!

I bet you will do better, plenty of fish around there for the next several months. I made my first kayak video at CHSP last August, gonna try to do some more this year.
And you're right, croaker do fight harder. If they grew to 20lbs you'd need stand-up gear and a 50# class reel to land them!

These guys are hard core! I probably wouldn't even take my boat out there in that......

The funny/crazy thing about that is when I was out there I was thinking how glad I was not to be in a boat rocking around. I fish with a commercial h&l guy sometimes out of Goose Bay and last summer we took a trip to PLO for flounder and croaker and he got sea sick! Granted we were in his friend's big trophy boat that sits pretty high, but this guy is in his boat almost every day on the Potomac! At least in a kayak you don't get the whole keel effect as much and it's kinda fun surfing down and paddling back up before your nose goes too deep. Not something I'd say everyone enjoys, but it's kinda fun once you realize you're not gonna sink.
