4-13-11, Miami report

I hooked 16 peacocks today and landed 10 (my best day yet). All on a fly too! One fish broke off at the end of the day and 5 of them came unbuttoned.

This is now one of my top fishing activities!

I met Capt. Mark at 7am at Coral Reef Park for a 1/2 day of canal fishing for peacock bass. At 1st, I was throwing a brown/orange clouser but the 1st 3 hits ended up with the fish getting off. Mark then decided to switch flies to an olive/orange clouser and went back to the missed fish and was able to land the 3 missed ones and then some!

Every fish was caught by sight fishing and aggravating them to strike. I had to make up 10 or 12 casts to catch some of them. A couple of them were hunkered down and it took some cajoling to lure them out of their hiding spot. Once hey got ticked, they would swipe at the fly and a strip set was executed to hook the fish. Very cool is the best I can say about this style of fishing.

We did see another boat fishing for these guys but they were using minnows.

Mark knows every nook and cranny of these canals. Sometimes he would point out a fish and it would take me a minute to see it.  I did get better at recognizing a fish towards the end of the day.

Our 1/2 day ended at 1pm due to the fact that I had to catch a plane to get to a business conference. Obviously, Mark does not count hours, he just likes to see his client catch fish.

The weather was perfect!

I will post pictures when I get home his weekend.

Great fishing!  I fished for peacocks in Hawaii, rivals Atlantic Salmon as toughest fish I've tangled with.

I've never hooked an Atlantic Salmon but will agree about the toughness.  You really have to work them to strike the fly and then it all break loose!
