Shad Fishing in the Occoquan River - They arrived (Mar 30)

I took off early and went to Occoquan Regional Park for shad fishing.  It was my shad fishing.  There was no sign of fish on the surface. Though, I found the shad.  I caught 14 shad for 3 hours of fishing.  The shad liked a small golden casting spoon (1/12 oz Kastmaster, 1 ¼” long).  Other bigger golden spoon did not work at all.  I caught only one on a shad dart.

Shad were at 14-17”. One was almost 18” long. The majority of them were 16-17”.
I shouldn’t keep 7 of them because I found that shad is not a good eating.  The roe was good though.

Shad was indeed “Poor Man’s Tarpon”.  Perhaps “Poor Man’s Ladyfish” is more appropriate description for shad.

Think tarpon mouth for the hickory + there are fewer Americans and the Americans are bigger....

I'm with Dominion Dan, I can't tell the two apart and just throw them all back. But they are a blast to catch on the UL..

Cool video....

Hardcore fisherman....

Best rod yet!

Congrats on your 1st Hickories...but I would not keep them. They taste terrible (unless you plank them) and the season is closed below the fall line on the Occoquan.

Th rod fits into a 29" luggage when I traveled Caribbean.

Nikon S200 ( a cheap out-dated)  in a underwater camera housing).  The only good thing about the camera is that  I can take alomost 1.5 hours of video with a after-market ($9.99) battery. The cameras with HD feature have very short battery life.

I hear you. I researched and read again and again to be legal.  I will not eat the fish agian.  The shad are  good  C & R fish for  very light tackles.

All,
The fall line is 95 bridge.  I fished the north of 123 bridge.  But the place was not accessible for shore-fishermen, I think.  Also, do not try to eat this fish. they are aweful.  My wife will complain again when she comes home.  I am keeping  my windows open.
