Went out back after the sun had dropped down to practice a little fly casting....and catching!
Caught 5 bass and 1 blue gill in about 30 minutes. I was using a black/blue bead headed sparkle fly.
Smallest bass was about 5" and the largest was a pounder!
Felt good to finally get some pullage on the long stick!

Glad to see you had a great fly fish outing. I may have to bring mine out of storage and start practicing again. You know how to float that line out beautifully

Tyler (my son) and I were on the other side of the lake catching about the same thing (5-10 inches) at the same time on small orange/brown spinners and a real small crankbait. We had about 15 in an hour once Tyler figured out fishing SLOW and small lures was the key. There were bait fish all over the place breaking the surface between the drain and shoreline. Drove us nuts when we couldn't catch anything with all that action for about 30 minutes until we slowed the retrieve down a lot.
Then we went across the street to Beech and caught a couple bigger bass (only up to about 1 lb though) on a small rattletrap just before it got really dark. Nice to finally get out for a while after work.

Got a nice crappie on a fly late this afternoon, he smacked it as it hit the surface. That was it ....

Sounds awesome, one of these days someone's gonna get lucky and hook one of those grass Carp.

say, you mention the carp...
they are acting weird
i was on the pavilion tues
i was humming along and spooked a pair
holy smokes!
a 4' fish ( or more ) can really push some water
and they do this thing where they stick their head out of the water and look at you, in the middle of the thrashing, streaking, and boiling
1/2 reminded me of that nightmare i had about asian carp a while back.
all i can say is YUCK!

In Asia, they are a very desirable table fare. In Europe, they are a preferred target species. They (Europeans) even come here to DC for Carp tournaments.

I'm the same way about carp. I know they pull hard but I can't help but to be disgusted by them.

I'm relatively new to fly fishing and hit the pond/lake that connects Ashburn Village Rd and Ashburn Rd (not sure the name of it) last Friday and Sunday. I had minimal luck using a popper and was wondering what works for bass fishing in these waters this time of year? I've tried w/ no luck throwing woolly buggers but haven't tried and dries or nymphs.
Thanks for the help.

I will consider myself an expert in catching Blue Gills on a fly. It's pretty easy and I have dozens of flies that work both top water and sub surface. Sometimes they are 2-3 feet down, a foot down or they will attack a surface popper.
Bass? A different ballgame. I have caught plenty using several different flies (clouser, steamer, wooly, bead head, top water) but I have yet to catch anything over 3 pounds. Most are less than a pound.

that video ( actually qualifies as a short film to me ) is a real gem!
that pair on the pavilion i was jousting with: at least 2x bigger than the fish shown in the film, maybe 3
