Get the correct glue.............and all will be good.  Look up on-line installations on yaks.........I'll help.

Chorizo.............no problemo

Re: Installation of my Fish Finder for my kayak.....

Which yak are you doing this on? I just did mine but it was with the installation kit that came with my FF. Humminbird now sells a kayak installation kit. For you it might not be the best option. They use marine grease instead of marine goop, which simon says goes everywhere if its hot and your yak is upside down.

Best adhesive to use is Lexel or marine goop i think...

The scary part is drilling into the kayak. I still haven't gotten myself to drill into the hull of my yak for my anchor trolley.

All the holes are in....I just need to mount the transducer on to the bottom.

This goes in to the Yellow Prowler.

In that case, that would be a cinch! Do you want to do the traditional foam block with goop or the wet well method? The goop will be the easiest. Do you have the foam and goop/lexel?

Cinch? Ha! I don't have any of the instructions (wires) or the kit. And I don't have goop, foam  or lexel. You see how I am talking myself out of doing this? I think I will take it down either to Lake Anna and let MsCotter's guys (LKA Outfitters) or to Kent Island and let CD Dollar (KI Kayaks) fix me up.

Hey Ernie, did you ever get this installed? I've done a couple and would be more than happy to help you out. Nice boat you have there, I have the Trident 13.

Michael,

WELCOME aboard! Looking forward to your reports and fishing with you as well.

I have not installed the unit yet but I did buy most of the materials. While most folks have recomended Marine Goo, a boat mechanic/dealer recomended 5 Minute Epoxy.

Either way, I need to get this thing done!

Re: Installation of my Fish Finder for my kayak.....

Thanks for the welcome aboard! Kayaking has taken over my fishing interest this year and I have already rigged 3 transducers for my boat or others.

My recommendation would be to use some closed cell foam and trace a template of your transducer into it. Then cut out the foam so that the transducer is snug inside and won't move around. Use the goop to glue to a flat part of your hull, I usually try to go right beneath the middle of my feet. Use a thin layer of goop make sure you cover all edges because you want to make sure the pocket you create needs to be water tight. Press hard and place a heavy object on top overnight. Once your goop sets up take a big glob of vaseline and place it under the transducer, then push it into the foam block you made. Should work like a charm and this way you have a semi permanent install and can test your set up. Once you are sure you like where the transducer is and the reading you're getting, remove the foam (should peel off, goop might need a little encouragement but is easy) then goop it down in the location permanently. I'd trace the inside of the block with a permanent marker so you get the same orientation.

I'd be glad to help and can give you some other rigging tips as well. Let me know when you want to head out in your kayak because I am always looking to go!

My recommendation......

I was going to do it Saturday but I spend a lot of time trying to figure out why the Prowler was taking on water. I believe that I bought a damaged kayak....I hope I don't find the info from the seller 'cause I ain't happy! Anyway, the depth finder will have to wait until I get the yak fixed. But thanks for the info (I bet I will never do it myself)!

As soon as I get that baby back, I am ready and able to go so let's start planning!

Re: Installation of my Fish Finder for my kayak.....

Taking on water!!!? Leaky hatch or taking on water from a crack? I'd check the scupper hole areas, that's usually the weak link. You can use a flash light and see if you can see through or take some soapy water and put it inside the kayak, then look for where it bubbles out... Hopefully it will be an easy fix!

I read about a new method using electrical putty, I'll get back to you on that.

Re: Installation of my Fish Finder for my kayak.....

It's 2 of the scupper hole areas...one leaks just a bit, the other is a major leak.

I have a guy near Harper's ferry who patched my other yak but he is in his busy season.

The problem is always time....so I may take it somewhere for everything.

they aren't the cheapest but i wonder if Backyard boats would be able to patch that yak up. I know they install fish finders too.
