3-27-10, West Palm Beach drift fishing

Wow......what a morning!

Mike Schulte, Joe Shallcross and Lance Gad booked our favorite WPB boat, the Sea Horse, for a morning of fishing with Capt. Lee Egan and his trusty mate, Matt.

We were joined by Mike Goodwin, Bill and Sam Gunn (who is a terrific young athlete from St. Louis MO).

We motored out in the 42' Markley and joined the drift fleet.....there were at least 50 boats within sight.capt. Lee declared that it was time to drop the lines down. We use 15-30 lb class rods rigged Caroline style with a 1 oz.barrel sinker and a 6' leader (40 lb mono).

Once all the lines were in I declared that young Sam would catch the 1st fish and he quickly obliged by catching the 1st King Mackerel (kingfish) of the day (we caught 20!).

After that, it all broke loose and everyone joined Sam in catching fish. We were catching blue runners, False Albacore (albies, bonito) and what we came for, the mighty kings.

My guess is that we hooked 50 fish for the morning (total fishing time was 3 hours).....it was absolute non stop....controlled pandemonium! Fun filled action
Would be an understatement.

At one point, Mike hooked into a larger fish and fought him for a bit but he broke off....Mike will have nightmares about what he may have been hooked in to. At another point, Bill was hooked into a bonito and then we saw a porpoise come in at it and then.....gone, a snack for Flipper!

We saw several sharks including a hammerhead as well as a large turtle.

Let's just say that today was close to perfection....great fishing....great weather...and a great crew!! We will sleep well tonight!

Re: 3-27-10, West Palm Beach drift fishing

And now...the rest of the story.

I keep 4 rods down at Mike's place on Singer Island. Three of them are for fishing ponds, creeks, lakes, canals etc and one of them was to use on Capt. Lee's boat. When I got down there, one of the 1st things I did was to go get them and ready them up for some fishing. They were stored in a storage area within the condo (basement) in a locked cage.

Gone! That is what I said when I got down there...no sign of my gear. We played out every scenario to try to figure out what happened. The place is high end and very secure so perhaps a contractor quickly unhinged the cage and took my gear.

Well....I hope he has fun with them even though three of the rods were older and had lost a few inches form the top. One of them was a full 10 inches shorter than what it used to be.

The biggest loss was my St. Croix Tidemaster with an Abu 6600 C4 reel to be used on Capt. Lee's boat. It never made it on board.

But.....as consolation, I went down to Juno Beach Tackle and had them start on a custom rod for drift fishing. It will be built on a Batson blank.
