Tidewater/Upper Potomac 5/24-25

Headed down to the Richmond/Tidewater area for some good fishing on Sunday. Met up with some friends from Newport News and fished one of their favorite local tidal creeks. We arrived in the morning during outgoing tide and caught them good on docks and points where the creek narrowed and funneled the current. Thousands of gar were up in the creek spawning and were absolutely everywhere we went. They would cruise around in pairs rolling and slashing at bait, some over 4 feet long. My buddy had a 3-footer on his spinnerbait but ended up shaking him off to avoid missing fingertips. We threw cranks and spinners and caught some nice bass and a mean old bowfin on a lipless. Current went slack around lunchtime so we switched to worms and flukes and caught a few more shorties. We made a run to the back in the afternoon when the tide started coming in and caught a couple more bowfin and a nice 4lb largemouth flipping wood and tree roots. Ended up staying back there too long and got caught in the dark on the way out. Trying to navigate a shallow unfamiliar river filled with crabpots in pitch-black darkness can get pretty sketchy...thank God for handheld GPS. We ended up making it out safe though after a long but very nice day on the water.

On Monday I spent a couple hours hiking and fishing with my girlfriend along the Potomac River above Great Falls. We caught a bunch of little smallies on finesse worms and senkos. They seemed to like the current breaks behind rocks and thick wood the most. Also saw a bunch of other people catching bluegill and some nice catfish. We ended up getting caught in the rain and had to make a mad dash back to the car. Still a very nice end to a great Memorial Day weekend. Hope everyone out there enjoyed theirs as well :-)
